Road projects
receive funds
Funds to improve highway
safety in the Sacramento Valley
counties of El Dorado and
Nevada were allocated today by
the California Highway Commission at a business meeting in
San Diego. ~
In recommending the three
projects, Commissioner Moon
Lim Lee of Weaverville said the
Camino, Placerville and Lake
Tahoe Railroad crosses Route 50
in El Dorado County about three
miles east of Placerville. The
roadway width at this location
forces some vehicles, such as
buses and tank trucks which by
law must stop at grade
crossings, to stop on the traveled
way of highway.
Lee said this stopping causes
the risk of rear-end-accidents or
unsafe changes of lanes by
following vehicles. He proposed
the widening of the highway to
provide stopping lanes and the
installation of automatic gate
protection with flashing signals.
The Commission budgeted
$42,000 in state highway funds
for this improvement.
New Chamber Office
FRED CONWAY at his desk in the Nevada county-Nevada City Chamber of Commerce office is surrounded by furnishings of the 19th century. Conway works
three days a week in the South Yuba Canal Building as the county chamber
executive. The old building, recently restored for Nevada City, may have only
furnishings of the building’s period, the owners decided. The lovely brass light
fixture sports three lamps, once gas but now electricity, and three eagles as
decorations. The gas stove behind Conway’s desk, is an antique but of a later
period than the building and light fixture. The furniture is last century and most
of it donated by the Empire mine, once graced the Empire mine office.
