MRS. L. NORMAN OWLER, president of the Ridge Road Garden Club and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Administrator Lloyd Hamilton study landscaping plans for another area of the new wing of the hospital. "Notes off By P. L. It is simply beautiful up here in God’s Country today — Sunday, March 18. I’m_ back from a rather typical ‘Smith vacation”. .°. it rained generously nearly everywhere I set foot. Oh, there was a sunny afternoon one day in Fresno, and the clouds rolled away briefly over Coalinga and the old Mustang Grade country — alive with golden poppies and royal purple lupine. And, I must admit it wasn’t too bad while I was surveying the UC campus at Santa Cruz or visiting my old hometown, Mountain View. But the rest of it was “‘Rain, rain, go away”. . . and please, don’t bother to come back any day! That was the case during the first half of my two weeks away from it all. The second part turned out a bit better.. do you know. it actually hit 67 degrees one day yp in Quincy! NOD si. couple of great days up yonder in Plumas county just before returning home. : Fresno really astounded me. . . it had been such a long time between visits there. That downtown mall is something to be seen no matter what takes you to that area. And their convention center is something else again. Whoever dreamed that one up certainly has a wild imagination — architecturally speaking, that is. They’ve had it rough down there, weather-wise, all winter. Orange groves stand as mute testimony. water, places. Oranges lying on the rround. . . frozen and inedible. . . really wanted to go up-country into the Parks. . . but time and weather voted me down. “eR KS sure enough, had a: water . everywhere and all in the wrong © the Cuff” Smith Visited Kingsburg briefly. . . that’s the town which has gone ‘Swedish’ to a degree —a bit on the order of Danish Solvang. They have a unique railroad Station there. . . really old and eye-catching. Enjoyed shore dinners and some excellent Spanish meals over in old Monterey. especially on the famous wharf and on Cannery Row. Did a lot of window shopping in Carmel and came to the conclusion o e can do just as well or better in our local boutiques, galleries and antique shops any day. We've got so much to brag about and to be thankful for up here, as far as ‘‘doing the-tourist bit’’ is . concerned. That University of California campus at. Santa Cruz was a delight to see. With several colleges. completed and a number more to go. . . it really does impress. Those stately redwoods running down to meet the beautiful Pacific combine to inspire and thrill, certainly. f you should chance to visit that area, do not pass up the opportunity to visit ‘‘Cooper House’’ in downtown Santa Cruz. . . it is most interesting and ‘‘entertaining’’ to say the least. Had a delightful visit, in Mountain View, with a long-time Nugget subscriber — John O’Halloran. He’s the city manager there and a very fine chap. . . who plans to come up and see Bob Paine sometime soon. Owns some property at Lake City and has.a love for and appreciation of this county which he readily voices. ‘ It was a good two weeks. . . but believe me — I’m glad to be: home! R.W. Dappelmayr basic graduate Airman Robert Wayne Doppelmayr will graduate from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Tex. on March 14. He will then be assigned to Lowry AFB, Denver, Colo. where he will work in weapons maintenance. He is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Doppelmayr. of Nevada City, a graduate of Empire High School and he enlisted in the U. S. Airforce on Jan. 29. Penn Valley Riders hold breakfast ride Penn Valley Riders went on a breakfast ride Sunday, leaving Pegar’s Y and riding to Silva’s Ranch. Although only 20 riders took the trail nearly 50 were on hand for a breakfast of sausage, © eggs and hot cakes. The Penn Valley Riders will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Penn Valley Firehouse for a jutney dinner. The riders normaly meet on the third Wednesday of each month. Garden club donates for landscaping The Ridge Road Garden Club donated $100 to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for landscaping around the new wing. This donation brings to $2,000 monies given SNMH over the past several years for land‘scaping. President Mrs. L. Norman Owler and members worked out the design, donated plants and solicited help from husbands and friends to carry out their project of landscaping the circle area for their as year’s project. : The garden club has one major fund-raising event annually with proceeds going to various community organizations for landscaping or
gardening efforts. Members of the club met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Louise Quimby for the monthly luncheon meeting. Many of the garden club members are also members of the SNMH Auxiliary and work at the hospital as pink ladies.
