apologies on April 16th.
Then came a knock on the door.
The baby sitter said, ““There’s some
True.”
Tell them I'll be:right out.”
But they were in too much of a hurry
to wait, True said, and barged into the
bathroom. “Both were over six feet
and weighed about 200 pounds,” True
look about them.”
‘Are you True?” one of them asked.
“Tl try to be,”’ replied John, in-an attempt to put the thing on a social level.
They busily started patting his pants
with their hands. “Are these your
clothes?” one asked. The other queried,
“Have you a rod?” :
“. don’t even own one,” True answered.
“Get dressed.” they ordered.
“Where are we going?”
“You'll find out.”
At that point one of the men (later
True found out his name was Van)
left the bathroom. The other stood
guard while he dressed. “I began to
wonder was this a joke or if they had
confused me with someone else. They
hadn't shown me any identification or
a warrant for arrest. . tried stalling for
time, taking-a tong time to dress, hoping that Seth Terry would come home.
In the meantime, the guard who stayed
with me (his name was Bob) stared at
me like one of us was crazy.” +
“When I had finished dressing,”
Irue continued, “‘we went into the living room. . asked Bob if . could make
a telephone call to Reno. He said, “You
may telephone from Auburn.’ Before
leaving the house, I asked the baby sitter to tell Terry that ‘three guys got
me. . worded the message like that
because I deliberatly wanted to alarm
Terry.”
After a third man had joined them
(a little fellow, in comparison, True
said) they got into a 1953 Chevvie and
drove away. “I noticed when we got
into. the car that it didn't have a license
plate on the rear.
“Bob and I sat in back. Van asked
me, ‘Where do you live?’
‘Across town,’ . told him.
“When we got in the house, they
isked me if there were any .guns
around. . told: them two and they
promptly found them. Neither.of them
belonged to me. I got the impression by
the way they were hunting around that
thev were looking for dope. So I told
you re barking up the wrong tree’.””
“You know what we're looking for,”
one of them replied.
Again, True said, he asked if he
might phone either Terry or Harold
Rerliner, his attorney. ‘Phone from
Auburn,” they said.
They whizzed by the turn to Auburn
without stopping, True related, but
they pulled up at the 4 Corners restaunoted. ‘They had a mean, officious
them, ‘If you're looking for dope, .
GRASS VALLEY MAN TELLS OF ARREST
_Gohn True, 38-year-old deep sea diver and a new resident of Grass Valley, was
picked up by three men at the Glenbrook Heights home of a friend and business
associate, Seth Terry, on April 11th. He was released by the Burbank police with
A diver for 19 years, True has Participated in many rescue missions. From 1942
until 1950 he was engaged in secret government work.
For the first time in any newspaper, the Nugget prints his full story.)
: After diving into ice cold Idaho lakes for the previous two weeks, John True
found a good warm bath a wonderful feeling. “I felt pretty good that Saturday
afternoon,” he said. “About the only crime I had committed then was to steal
some of Mrs. Terry's French bath soap.”

gentlemen at the door to see you, Mr.
rant. They all got out and they held a
secret powwow. Van went inside to
make a phone call; apparently he got
fresh instructions because he dropped
out of the group. Bob then began his
interrogation.“Did you know Santo?" he asked,
referring to John Santo, now being
sought for possible complicity in the
Gard Young murders in Chester.
“Yes, I know him,” True said he
answered. “But . don’t know a great
deal about the man.”
True said that at this moment he became certain they were police officers.
Until this point he had strongly suspected they were but wasn’t definitely
sure. He asked Bob, “Are you guys
officers?”
“That's right,” True says Bob replied. “You don't know whether we
are, do you? You don’t know whether
we are part of a mob, do you?”
This line of questioning stumped
him, True says, but apparently it
pleased Bob. “You know what we want
you for,” True says Bob told him.
“Why don’t you run away so we could
shoot you in the spine and save the
State a lot of expense?" :
True didn't cotton to that idea at all. :
Bob, however, was all warmed up and
éouldn't let it drop. “I could take that
gun we got back there and shoot you
and what could you do about it?”
“That's right,"” True said he replied,
_wishing he were back in the bath tub.
“How do you know we won't do
it?" True says Bob asked him.
“IT don’t know that you wouldn't do
it,” John replied, in proper TV style,
then, realizing that he might get shot
before the commercial, he decided to
ask some questions himself. “Are you
officers?" ,
“We are,” Bob is said to have replied.
““What=department?”’
“You'll find out in plenty of time.”
Somewhat later, True says, they arrived on the outskirts of Sacramento.
Fhe little fellow at the wheel, True says,
had been driving pretty fast and before
you could say “dragnet” a motorcycle
cop flagged them down. This, naturally,
“was a somewhat humiliating experience
for a city cop but after discussion outside the car it was squared away. While
the conference was in progress Bob had
instructed True to look straight ahead.
After they left Sacramento, Bob renewed his interrogation. “Why don’t
you confess to the whole thing>”’ True
says Bo® asked him, then added,
“You've got a lot on your mind. It'll
make you feel better.”
True says he told them he couldn't
think of anything to confess to.
