Confusion of tax exemption Assessor E. A. ‘‘Bub’’ Tobiassen claims that many Senior Citizen homeowners over -62 are confusing their homeowner’s exemption with the Senior Citizens Property Tax Relief. The homeowner’s exemption is available to anyone, any age, who lives in and owns their home on March 1, 1973. This exemption in the amount of $1,750 in assessed value is, as stated, available to any homeowner regardless of his or her income and should not be confused with the Senior Citizens Property Tax Relief, which includes only homeowners 62 and over. The Senior Citizens Property Tax Assistance law is administered by the= State of NOEL E. WHITE JR. Noel E. White completes basic SAN ANTONIO — Airman Noel E. White Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel E. Burning permits now available The California Division of Forestry will begin issuing burning permits at the Nevada City Forest Fire Station today. Residents may obtain permits Monday through Friday during normal hours. The office will issue permits earlier this year to avoid the last minute rush near April 1st. Burning permits are required by law between April 1 and December ~ California and anyone 62 years * of age or older-on January 1, 1973, and aé_ resident of California, is eligible providing their income is not in excess of $10,000 for the previous calendarvear. This assistance is very : 3 important to the senior citizen «© who qualifies. : The claims for tax assistance © = should be filed between May 16 ~ and October 15, 1973, and not before or after. Forms will be available at: the Collector’s Office on or after May 16. The. percentage of refund to the Senior Citizen ranges from 4 per cent to 96 per cent of the amount of taxes for the home and up'to one acre of property. This assistance, of course, depends on the total gross income into the household of the applicant as long as it is under $10,000 per calendar year. Assessor Tobiassen also states that a few veterans, who formerly had filed veteran claims,
do not appreciate the fact that the homeowner’s exemption is $1,750 in assessed value and the veteran’s is $1,000. A veteran owning two parcels may file the homeowner on one parcel where he lives and the veteran’s exemption on the other providing he does not go over the limit on the valuation of the veteran’s total holdings. Tobiassen again reminds the public that April 16 is the deadline for filing homeowner’s and veteran’s exemptions. Those homeowners filing in person must have the Social Security card number of their spouse, unless deceased or homeowner is’ unmarried.
