Ld NUMBER 61 VOLUME 49 10 Cents A Copy Pu blished Wednesdays, Nevada City Wednesday, March 22, 1972 NC Chamber making plans for summer Spring is in the air and the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce is making plans for its summer program. Directors meeting Tuesday heard that the city has approved the proposed route for the Fourth of July parade and hanging miners' clotheslines across Broad Ctreet as a part of the Independence Day ‘celebration. They also discussed conducting log sawing and pie throwing contests and a donkey baseball game. Plans will be further firmed up at the next celebration meeting. They voted to spend $1,20C to finance the June 18 bicycle race. In other action they tentatively set April 7 for the date of a rummage sale to be held in the Methodist Church. --Dr. Roy Stauffer announced the annual Malakoff Homecoming will be held June 11 in North Bloomfield. Now they are engaged in an exciting business in Grass Valley, and "want to spend the rest of our lives in this beautiful community." Ed and Mary Fllen Crane recently purchased Pioneer Travel Service at 156 Mill Street; and, as professional travel consultants, they can open up whole new worlds of travel adventure for those with the yen and time to get away from the humdrum of routine. It admittedly costs money to travel. . . .but with careful planning and proper scheduling, many delightful travel gems are available within the limitations of any checkbook. And a few minutes conversation with Ed and Mary Ellen is guaranteed to give one a hard case of wanderlust. The Cranes have traveled extensively, and love it. They've visited many romatic and colorful places. . ..East Africa, South America, and Middle East, Greece, the Crient, and they lived and worked in Hawaii for { three years at one time. Prior to their marriage, Mary Ellen enjoyed a stay in Italy as a university student. It was almost 20 years ago
that Ed left the U.S, Air Force and joined Eastern Airlines. . . the first of several major lines for which he worked. . . ."because I had flying in my blood." It's a long story, but after the three years on the Hawaiian scene, he was in New York City for the Hwaiian Visitors’ Bureau. . . .later joined TWA and came to San Francisco in 1965 with their marketing division. From there they went to San Jose to live and work for a travel agency. . . .where Mary Ellen was a part-time employe. They came to Grass Valley from San Jose, Their long-nurtured desire to have an agency of their own prompted them to check a "lead" on a bureau reportedly for sale in Sonoma ... .but they arrived too late ED AND MARY Ellen Crane are familiar with traveling on purchased the Pioneer Travel Service in Grass Valley. to make a deal there. . . .so followed the travel business "esrapevine’ to Pioneer Travel Service a short time &go. ... and now feel that the "dream" has become reality in every way. Mary Ellen was bitten by the travel bug when she started to work for AirFrance in New York City, and the ailment became acute during her student years in Italy, Upon her return to the United States, she worked for BOAC out of Kennedy Airport . . . .and there she met Ed, The addition to the family of handsome son Steve, age five, and later — Kimberly, a pretty two and a half year old doll — limited her career to part-time work in the San Jose agency. These dearly loved adopted children are being well cared for at home now, permitting their mother more time to devote to the new business, Ed says they have never been so elated and happy before, The agency is doing an excellent cruise business, . . .one example cited is that they have 11 area folks off on a dream cruise to the Caribbean now ... with many more such reservations coming in daily. They are presently renting a comfortable place in Peardale. Ed belongs to Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce, and plans on really active membership in these local civic organizations, He and Mary Ellen are water sport enthusiasts, . ..they especially enjoy boating and water skiing, . . .and are looking forward to making full use of the recreational facilities offered in the area.
