55 EE ow ree 2S sy wwe eee ide 10 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, March 22, 1972 Washington News . By Judi Stewart It seems as if summer has the dry year ahead of us. Water come very early this year, The warm weather has brought tourists to our area already. There were campers at the government campgrounds, and people were enjoying motor bike rides along Maybert Road all weekend. We don't mind these family groups with legal motor bikes that are quiet, but some of the bikes people ride here are without mufflers or license plates, but the Highway Patrol is unable to patrol this area regularly to stop them. We hope the noise will not be too bad this year. There have been weekends in the past summers that the peace and quiet of the country has been shattered by these noisy motor bikes. * * * *K The first swimming accident of the season occurred on Friday. Nevada City Rescue Squad was called out when Harold Feathers, 21, from Truckee, dove into a pool on Scotchman Creek and hit his head on arock in the water. His friends hiked to the nearest house to make the call to the rescue squad, According to Larry Parsons, chief of the rescue squad, Feathers' friends put him in a car and met the rescue unit half-way between Washington and Scotchman Creek. Feathers was taken to Nevada General Hospital not ; in serious condition. The hospital reports he was discharged on Saturday. * * * * The Washington County Water District held its monthly meeting Friday night. The directors are very much concerned about Two graduate at U.C. Davis Two Nevada county students are among the 300 University of California at Mavis seniors who are candidates for their bachelor's degree at the end of the winter quarter. The two are Mary Ballou of Grass Valley, majoring in design; and Dennis A. Douglas of Truckee, majoring in physical education. Adjustment *1.88 WIDE OVAL TIRES 13” RAISED WHITE LETTERS AVAILABLE NOW. RECAPPING SERVICE PLAZA TIRE CO., INC. BEHIND SPD 265-4642 may have to be rationed during the summer to make it go around. Water for lawns and gardens may be hard to come by. The town's water now comes from a spring in Henderson Ravine. The old ditch from Canyon Creek that was the town source, is in such bad repair the water only makes it about half-way to town. It does supply many of the people living along Maybert Road. The directors of the water district plan to walk the entire ditch on Monday to see how extensive the repairs would have to be in order for the Canyon Creek water to reach the small reservoir near town. Mrs. Clara Williams, secretary for the water district, arrived at the meeting Friday in a very unconventional vehicle. Her car was not in running condition and although she only lives a block away from the school where the meeting was being held and could have walked, she had a large box of things she had to take to the meeting, so she came in her little red garden tractor. * * * * There is to be a yard sale in Washington soon to benefit the fire department. We hope if the weather is nice on April 1, we will have a “fools day sale". There will be many pieces of furniture and other household items. * eK * The Sierra Treasure Hunting Club from Sacramento was on Maybert Road with 13 Jeeps and trailers Sunday, to remove two of the abandoned cars along our road. With torches they cut the cars in small enough pieces to haul to the dump. The club's state representative for conservation, Roy Howard, talked with me about their clean-up project. Last year they removed abandoned cars from the Grouse Ridge area which John Underwood, Nevada City District Ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, had told them about. After completing that job the club members went back to Underwood and asked if there were any other cars in the district that were eye sores. Underwood directed them to our area. I know of two more that should be removed, and Howard said maybe they could get them later. The club plans a conservation project every other month this year. — OS Gx E JUST HO EYNIAH “Everything you need . It's all here!” North Sa Juan News By idabel Covert Isabelle Whittlesey and I are just back from a hectic but enjoyable weekend as delegates from the local club to the annual convention of the California Democratic Council, held this year in Oakland, Besides being in a position to vote on a number of interesting resolutions, we were privileged to hear such speakers as Alan Cranston, Jerome Waldie, Ron Dellums, and John Merle, who is Northern California chairman of the Democratic Central Committee. Altogether a stimulating and informative experience, which I hope to be able to repeat. Last Monday, March 13, the trustees of the new San Juan Ridge Union School District held two special meetings with the architects for the new building. In the afternoon we visited the site, and that evening met at the North Columbia School. Several citizens attended both meetings, but not really enough. A reminder is in order that notice and agenda of all meetings is by law posted on the doors of both the North San Juan and North Columbia school houses at least three days before meeting. It is the duty of interested citizens to inform themselves. The regular bimonthly meeting will be held March 20 in North San Juan, and the first meeting in April will be on the 4th, at North Columbia. Be there. The United Methodist Church of North San Juan is busily preparing for Easter services.
Edith Haverty is rehearsing the choir for special numbers, and Leilani Greenlee and Jake Dabis are preparing solos, A very special number will include the cherub choir, not to be missed. Here are two thoughts on the same subject that appeal to me very much; hopefully others will get something from them too. "Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he become weary of you and hate you." Proverbs 25:17, Old Testament. The next is from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay on Friendship: "The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend is to be one. You shall not come nearer a man by getting into his house." FOLK..
