Grand Jury’s committees appointed The 1972 Grand Jury committee appointments for the coming year have been established. Grand Jury foreman Dell C, Riebe announced the committees today. Riebe named Jim E. Cranmer, forcman pro tem; and Mrs. Rebecca M. Hiscox, secrotary. The appointments are as follows: Truckee, --John E. Houlgate. Roads and subdivisions, -Stephen G. C. Hare, chairman; Patricia C. Dobbs, Ceorge H. Kohler; and Joel Bierwagen. County government, -Houlgate, chairman; Sibyl Leuteneker, W. W. Bishop, Mrs. Dobbs and Dean Deniz. Nevada County Audit, --Mrs. Leuteneker, chairwoman; Mrs, Hoffman, Astesana and Mrs, Morrison, Freeway light standards get ‘slip bases’ Lighting standards along six freeways will be equipped with "slip bases" designed to give way easily upon impact, according to the Division of Fighways. The freeways to receive the new lighting standards include Interstate 80 in Nevada and Placer counties. A_ half-mile segment at Emigrant Gap and a three mile segment near Truckee, in Nevada county; and six miles between Applegate and Colfax in Placer county will receive the new safety devices. In addition to equipping the standards with "slip bases" any standard foundations high enough for a vehicle to collide with them will be-replaced. Those standards within 10 feet of the traffic lanes will be relocated 18 feet from traffic. The Department of Public Works is advertising for bids for the lighting standards and will open bids in Sacramento on April 12, The project, covering six freeways in seven counties, will cost approximately $63,006. The weather has been so lovely that I have ahard time staying indoors. We inherited two weeping willow shoots this past week which Louie planted near our pond. My two locus plants, [ found out, are not locus plants at all. Now I've got to find out what they really are. * *k * Chuck and Rita Lankford had both sets of parents visiting with them last week. Rita's folks Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rogers from San Jose and Chuck's folks, Mr. and Mrs. John Lankford from Redding. It has been a couple of months since either set of parents had seen baby Liz and she is growing. Young Randy Heller graduated from crib to big bed, he's a big boy now. * Ok O* Marty Dahl, son of Barbara Nix, was home from Shasta College over the weekend. Miss Katy Clifford was a house guest at the Nix home over the weekend also, The young people did some sailing at Lake Wildwood. * Ok Penn Valley News By ELSIE DILLBERG 9 Tom and Eva Hill will be moving to Klamath Falls, Ore. in April. Eva will be the guest of honor at a luncheon at the Fire House on Wednesday. * * * Carl Dutra was involved in an accident last Wednesday evening in Vallejo. He was hit by a hit and run drunk driver. The Highway Patrol was able to catch up and apprehend the car and driver. Carl was able to drive as far as Grass Valley where he was hospitalized until Sunday. * * * The Penn Valley Riders had their 3rd annual breakfast Sunday morning and then proceeded
to.a trail ride which took them through the Frank Foster property, on to Ivan Branson's property and finally to Silva's: for a pit stop. There were 21 riders who participated. The riders will hold an Easter egg hunt on horseback on Easter Sunday afternoon at the Gene Foster property. There will be prizes for the best dressed horse in bonnet. That is the horse wearing the best looking bonnet will get the prize. Sounds like fun! * * * I'm hoping that more of you good people in the valley will call and tell me the events going on around your house. I know that lots must be happening that I don't hear about. "Ma'"' Baker is in Nevada County General Hospital (Rm. 22) and would appreciate hearing from her friends. Over 300 meals were served by firemen of the PeardaleChicago Park Volunteer Fire Department at their fund -raising breakfast Sunday. Members of the Chicago Park Garden Club will tour Eileen Mitchell's gardens on March 29 at 1:00 p.m. Chicago Park School fourth and fifth graders won the elementary school basketball tournament last week by defeating the Hennessy I team in the championship game Friday night. The score was 15 10. Marianne Bierwagen flew to Southern California recently to visit her sister and other relatives in Whittier. She returned by car with her aunt, Margaret Copeland. G, Altman and his wife, Lora Battaglio, have moved to Brooklyn, New York, the home of the bride's family. They will open a reading clinic. Mrs. Altman has an M.A. in business management and has been employed in that capacity in San Francisco for several years. Dan and Ruth Nichols and daughter, Linda have been living in Paradise. At least they have been making Faradise home base. Last year, Linda spent several months in Europe. Her sister, Cathy's husband, is stationed in Spain. Dan and Ruth have just returned from a trip to visit Cathy's family and travel in Europe. They have been visiting friends in the Grass Valley area; will soon leave for Wisconsin. They plan to move back to their Chicago Park home come fall. More school news, a Colfax musical group and tumbling team will put on an exhibition for the students Thursday. The traditional school Easter Egg hunt is Friday. ; April 7th will be kite day. Children are encouraged to bring handmade kites. Parental guidance is desireable for primary graders. Prizes will be awarded for the highest flying kite, the best decorated, and best construction.
