EXPERT WATCH AND
Truck Costs Affect Profits, Prof. Says
A reduction in agricultural truck operating expenses
would increase net farm
profits substantially and
help combat rising agricultural operating costs, a University of California agrial professor declared
Professor Roy Bainer. said
that, “ajthough farm profit
margins are tight, the volume of farm production is
the highest ever. The physical volume of. farm goods
. marketed in 1959 was at an}
all-time high and is expect-.
increased. volume of
eration of more trucks to
haul these gocds.”
Currently farmers purchase 20 per cent of all’
trucks sold in the U. S. and
last year accounted for 161,000 new truck registrations.
“Currently more than 80}
per cent of agricultural)
;in thirty-six to forty-five inch
products are moved by
truck. As this percentage
continues to increase, truck
operating expenses are becoming mcre and more vital
to the agricultural ecenomy,” he said.
’ Professor Bainer concluded that, “any reduction in
truck operating expenses
would enable farmers to reduce their actual fixed overhead and thereby increas¢
their net. profit.”
