OF DBL PS FFP RIES This ingenious instrument, which is both a player organ and a conventional spinet organ, too, plays not only the new long-playing organ rolls, but standard piano rolls as well. Developed by Kimball Research and Design Center, the player organ is now coming off the production line and into the nation’s stores and homes. Coincidentally, the Kimball organization was. founded in 1857, the same year that light opera composer Sir Arthur Sullivan composed “The Lost Chord.” The company’s president, Thomas L. Habig, declares that the player reproduction is so true to the living performance that Sir Arthur himself, if he were to return to the concert hall today, and blindfolded, could not tell the difference between the playing of a live organist and the electronic music 111 Mill St. What Will The Well Dressed Man Wear This Spring 2 He ll Wear Aad He'll Get Them At roll rendition of “The Lost Chord” on a player organ. “Stop” tabs on the new player organ can be set to produce an infinite variety of sound effects and solo instruments such as banjo, marimba, Hawaiian guitar, trombone and violin vibrato. By changing these “stops” while a roll is playing, any person can actually conduct the music just like an orchestra maestro does his musicians. In view of the shortage of church organists, says Habig, the automated organ may one day come into use, not only for regular services but for wed‘ dings, in either church or home. We may hear the march from Lohengrin and “Oh Promise Me,” peal out through the efforts of an organist whose only musical training has been at the push button.
