, 1966. .Nevada County Nugget. . “4 March 23 & NUGGET FEATURES Reall Fami AsI continue my series on Nevada City's “First Families” I realize that I didn't start back far enough and will this week correct myself, There was only one real first family in NC and that is Betsy andJosie the Last of the Oustamahs, They were the only residents ever that owned a perpetual Key to the City and were welcome in every home and at every public function. And Betsy earned by birthright to be The First Lady of Nevada City, She-She was bom here in 1818 and died 105 years later in 1923, She wasborn on the sight of the Nevada City Elementary School and when the first gold rush seekers came in 1849 her father painted mud on her face to make her unattractive. Josie, her lifetime friend died in 1940, Josie was the wife of Chief Charlie, They all lived at the Campoodie, They never wore shoes, They had a different house they visited for food every time they came to town. I knew them well. They came to our hanse on FriBetsy who was in Nevada City when the first white man arrived is seated-with my friend Vivie Alice Hughes Estey. WHE . “Betsy And Josie Were . y One Of The First ies Of Nevada City days which I always thought was a poor choice because most always we had creamed codfish and potatoes on that day, They preferred tea to coffee, They looked on Mr, and Mrs. J. J. Jackson, the grocers as their best friends, Once they got off schedule. and came to Lulu Clutters for breakfast. They had been earlierto have breakfast at Mrs. Jackson's, but had found Mrs, Jackson in tears not knowing that Tom Sharp (Mrs, Jackson's brother)had just died, Josie practically ordered Lulu to bake a cake and take it to Jackson's right away. Dr. Carl Muller was once called by Josie to the Campoodie totreat Chief Charlie, When Dr. Muller got to their cabin he found Josie standing behind the bed pulling old Charlie back and forth from his sitting up positionshe had tied a couple of dish cloths together and had them across his chest. Dr, Muller was high in praise of Josie she had properly, got old Charlie breathing again. On the left, Josie, wife of Chief Charley of the indian Campoodie, Josie belonged to a different tribe than Betsy (R) and thought she was a bit above Betsy on the social ladder, Here & There SR Se rs es Everyone Is Dancing To The Strains By Kimary Well, The Political Polka is in full swing again with cavorting candidates surveying the sidelines for well endowed monetary partners, or genius -type choreographers to direct the new dance, Every pre-election production calls for a new format in public persuasion, and every campaign calls for a new checkbooksomeone else's, Financial aid is hard to come by, and inducing a prospective benefactor to empty his full pocket intoan empty promise of future benefits is like dragging a scared cat across a thick carpet by the tail. They just don't come willingly, And the campaign canvass is a tough go for the polititian, Hecan be recognized by well worn smile; by hair, teeth, manners and wallet all cleanly brushed in preparation of the big drive for public recognition. I sometimes wonder if the slight monetary recompense is worth allthe expended energy, anger and awesome aches. encountered along election alley. Patriotism must be the answer. eeeeese Have you heard about the public spirited businessman in Grass Valley who loaned his brand new heater to the shivering gals at a CAROUSEL March'21 »eel he Rumanian Folk Ballet will make its debut in Sacramento at 8:15 p.m. in the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. are being lost. downtown rummage tale? Seems an over ardent customer unplugged it, hauled it to the counter and bought it (heat and all) for less than a dollar, Iread that more states are legally requiring theinstallation of seat beits in late model cars, This is the most laudable but it reminds me of the old adage about leading a horse to water. Who is going to enforce the fastening of said seat belts? And an open seat belt is as useless as a Democrat voting Republican in a primary. eeesees What's all the furor over old age? National magazines are printing article after article about wrinkle erasers, face lifts and injection treatments. One look at Nellie Schiffner should convince anyone that silicone can take a back seat. Nellie is one of the most beautiful women in Nevada County. Besides, if you are really worried about growing Your Dollars old there ate several ways to overcome it. The best wayI know is to lie about it. all you are only as old as you admit! eeeees According to astronomy, all people born under the sign of Aries are honest and straight forward, They particularly shun subterfuge and evasion and are helpful to a fault. So..... if you are looking fora quick loan or a donation, check the bifthdates of your friends and seek out the Aries born. (Finance chairmen take special note). If you are an Aries and are searching for a mate, give special atten“ tion to Sagittarius, Leo or Aquarius. eeeses Note: If the office girl bumps into you in the corridor and leaves a trace of lipstick on your shirt AND you have a jealous wife.. try rubbing the spot with a piece of white bread. Works fine. History Of The Expanding Middle Class (EDITOR'S NOTE--T his is another in the series on money and finance from the Bank of America), ..By Andrew Baldwin Chances are that since World War II, the income profile for your family has been steadily moving upward, It is no secret that much of our current prosperity rests upon the fact that a greatly expanded middle and upper income class has emerged since the war, Just how vast this transformation and reshuffling of the nation's buying power is can be told in a few simple figures, The National Industrial Conference Board recently showed that last year some 1] million, or 22% of the nation's families, had earnings exceeding $10,000, A decade earlier (measured in todays dollars) those in this category number 3.7 million and represented only 9% of the population. The “upper income” bracket is generally applied to those families that have an annual income ranging between $10,000 and $15,000, About 16% of the families in the nation are in this particular category. They account for an impressive 27 % of the total buying power. By many standards this group is of greatest interest to the nation's market men, It not only accounts for a higher proportion of demands than any other group but is also growing faster than any other group. + Tocontinue with our profile of . this category; slightly more than three out of every five families .in this category are 35-54, a ratio well above the norm, Both the young and the old are under represented, With the upward movement in the age scale, we find aslight decrease in the number of homes which include children. In some homes, Income youngsters have already core of age and have struck out on their own, A good proportion of families (70 %) have two or more members in the labor force, and close to 25 % have three or more, In fact, many a family is in the “upper income” bracket because so many of its members are employed. In most cases the extra worker is a child spending the interim years at home (post school and pre marriage). This means that the population of this income group is in a continuous state of change, When working youngsters leave to form their own households, the parent family often falls into a lower bracket.» In other homes, children come of work age and improve the family's income status, Almost one out of every two wives in this income group are employed; about half of these working women contribute 30 % or more to the total family budget. Finally, close to three out of every five households here have some income in addition to eamings, Educationally, this group is well above average: more than a third of all family heads have been to college, Not unexpectedly, we find a relatively large number employed in professional technical, and managerial jobs, Those broad classifications account for more than two-fifths of the total employment in this group. Craftsmen and foremen make up another fifth. The uppermost income bracket is the $15,000 and bver group. Only slightly over 6 % of the nation’s families are in this bracket, although they wield an estimated 18% of the total spending. The aging process noted earlier is continued here, Close totwo out of every three households are over 45, 20a ctese &S 80006 & INTELLIGENCES @@ @9e08 0° ©0Ge Of The Political. Polke’ After.
