Tee i negates — Helge ” ee et ee inca i dae ae ee a a ST « ¢ ea ll ee ao Hardy Souls ‘Capture The Pismo Clam One of the favorite winter sports along California's coast is Pismo clamming, When tides are low, clammers are cut by the tens of thousands, waist-deep in water, digging and searching for tasty morsels, SPORTS With the exception of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, which have a winter season between September and April, Pismo clamming isa year round sport, No fancy equipment is is needed, and anyone can participate if he doesnt mind entering the water. The only equipment necessary isa regular potato fork, ora heavy pitchfork, And even those are dispensable, for a clammer can search by merely standing in the surf and shuffling his feet until he feels the hard shell of a clam in the sand beneath him. On certain beaches, mounds or holes where clams are hidden can even be found. The most popular method of Pismo clamming is with the aid of a potato fork. The clammer enters the water and moves paralleltothe waterline, probing until he strikes a shell. Another equally good method is raking. The clammer makes a rake by bending the tines of a heavy pitchfork, and dragging it behind him through the sand, Skin divers have an easy time by using a faceplate and watching for the siphons of the clams underwater. Once a clam digger has found a Pismo clam, he must be sure its of legal size. South of the Monterey -San Luis Obispo County linethe minimum size is four andahalf inches, while north of that line the minimum size is five inches, Any clam smaller than the legal size must be replaced in its hole or returned to deep water. Clammers must also adhere to the bag limits of ten Pismo clams per person. When a good sized clam been found, the best way to open itis to leave it undisturbed for a while, when it will usually open its shell a fraction, enough for the clammer to insert a knife deftly and slice its muscles, The sand can then be washed away under a freshwater faucet. Beforethe clams are opened, however, they should never be placedor rinsed in freshwater. This willonly make them shut all the tighter, and eventually they will die, If the first method fails, the elams can be frozen, which causes the muscles to relax sufficiently to make their shells open, GUY SAID, "WE ONE Asout 2000 YEARS Nad THIS PNOTHER .." a ? Dennis Douglas, Greg Moore, Wally Rothgeb and Boat Owners Are Warned About Dangers Of Improper Engine Ventilation Boat ownersbeware! Your boat may not be adequately ventilated, It may be in danger of exploding. or catching fire. ' This warning was recently issuedby the Coast Guard District Office in San Francisco because of the general lack of efficient ventilation noted on motorboats operating in California waters. According to boating accident statistics compiled by the Coast Guard, fires and explosions -on boats continue to be the greatest cause of property damage and the second greatest cause of personal injuries. _ There have long been Federal regulations requiring ventilation of gas tanks and engine compartments on Certain types of motorboats, but in an effort to promote proper and efficient ventiFowl Cholera Threatens The outbreak of fowl cholera first reported in mid-December continues to be a problem from the Delta northward throughout the Sacramento Valley, the California Department of Fish and Game reported this week. So far, the DFG said, as estimated 5,000 to 6,000 ducks, geese, andswanshave died from the disease. Lecal Wrestler Places in Club MeetSierra College’s Tom Moule of Grass Valley, a 154 pound wrestler, was taken to Olympic Club competitive wrestling last week by Coach John Horrillo and placed third in his weight class, right behind a nationally ranked Louisiana grappler and a member of the 1964 US Olympic team. Wrestling was free style, the type used in the Olympics and not followedin usual high school or collegiate competition, according to Horrillo. ODD BOOKING.. wHE PROMISED 10 RETURN SOMEDAY AND BSTABLISH HIS The Department is continuing regular surveys of the cholera area tokeep tabs on the disease, It usually occurs at this time of year in the Delta area, the Department said, but this year's outbreak seems to be slightly more severe than usual, It is a bacterial disease and is different from the Asiatic cholera which is fatal to humans, Birds that contract the disease usually die within 12 hours. Federal and State employees on National Wildlife Refuges and State Waterfowl Management areas are removing dead birds and burning them to reduce the spread of the disease. Since the disease isspread through the water, the DFG said, private duck club operators are .
urged to drain their areas as soon as practicable, Where possible the removing and burning of dead birds will help controi the spread of cholera, lation of motorboats, the Coast Guard amended the regulations during June 1965 to more clearly and adequately express the intent of the regulations, The new requirements, which will be enforced on all navigable waters of the United States starting June 1, 1966 provide that . each closed gas tank or engine compartment on motorboats shall have at least two ventilator ducts fitted with cowls or their equivalent. The exhaust ventilator duct shall extend from the open atmosphere tothe lower portion of the bilge or floor and the intake duct installed so as to extend to a point at least midway to the bilge or at least below the carburetor air intake. The cowls shall be located and trimmed for maximum effectiveness and in such manner as to prevent displaced fumes from being recirculated, Dave Baily Wins Conference Honors Grass Valley Sophomore Dave Bailey of Sierra College became the first man in Golden Valley Conference wrestling history to win his weight class two years running when he took the 123 pound title this past month.
