. By Fay M. Dunbar Our new post office is nearing completion and is undoubtedly one of the nicest small post offices around, Most of them just look like big old ugly post offices but this one has really been planned to be an addition to the community. When the new wears off it will look as if it might have been here as long as the Blacksmith Shop. The Steeles of Yuba City are to be complimented, * * R &R * * The Quentin Doolans of the mobile homes park have been home from their winter holiday in Mexico for a couple of weeks but they have been away fishing most of the time, I finally managed to catch up with them last Wednesday. They say the fishing in Mexico is good too, Evelyn likes to fish as much as Quentin (Buck) does and so both enjoyed their trip. They spent: the Christmas holidays with relatives in Southern California, They worked their way gradually down through Mexico almost to the capital city. They are already planning another trip for next year and I imagine they will add another couple of hundred miles to their itinerary and see Mexico City too. Guadalajara was this year'sdestination and they found it much to their liking. According to my encyclopedia "aside from the capital it is the most interesting city in the republic, and has a climate unequalled anywhere." Apparently it was their favorite. Ocean fishing was not too far away and there was fresh water fishing nearby. * * R& R * * Mrs. Loraine Long of Prospector Way just off Rough and Ready Road is recovering from a lengthy illness, She telephoned the other day to let me know she would love to have visitors. HE WR ie HER * * R&R * * Malakoff Diggins' State Historic Park is going to use a hydraulic monitor on its Homecoming Day (June 13) invitations. The theme this year is Mighty Monitors of the Malakoff. They have selected an actual photograph for this time but are looking for good ideas of the monitor t6 be used in the ‘future as a symbol — hopefully for the entire county. Mrs, Lucille McCrea of our com‘munity has worked up a-couple of ideas to be presented at their next meeting. Daniel Beatie and Fay Dunbar of our community both serve on this committee. * * R & R * OF I attended a reception for Roger Lane at his showing of paintings at The Office last Sunday afternoon. His real passion is portraits but he had many good landscapes also, He uses both brush and knife pallette techniques. We have at least one portrait painter among our own community group of of os oo Ba oe ne # Re artists. Mrs, Bea Mackey used brush and oil on the one I saw and I loved it, Nowadays artists seem to use a wide variety of techniques. One of our own, Nick Vogt, really goes for watercolor, I. don't know about’ Marion (Sam) Harwood, Grace . Jansen, Violet Kavka, and Rudolph Lanzandorfer but I think they work mostly in oil. Eugene Walter, Sr., who is still ‘away in Germany visiting his family uses oil. Lucille Mc-— Crea combines crafts with her art and uses a variety of materials .and techniques, When Kathy Gregor gets those four daughters of her raised, I'm sure we will see more interesting things from her also, Unfortunately I have probably missed some of our artistic neighbors, I am not an artist myself (can't draw a straight line or a curved one either) so I am not up on the work being done but I know what I like and I sure think Rough and Ready has its share of people doing interesting things. * * R&R * * Well, spring is here according to the calendar. It seems to have been here almost all winter actually, On my calendar it happened last Thursday. The sun rose at 6:09 a.m, and set at 6:09 p.m. But to get real technical I hear the actual time was Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. This was the exact point of time at which the celestial equator and the ecliptic crossed producing equal days and nights all over the world. The ecliptic is the arbitrary line we draw around the globe at its exact center and ‘the celestial equator is the path of the sun around the earth, The sun reaches the vernal equinox about March 21 of each year and the autumnal equinox about September 23 of each year. I shall not attempt to go any further. It gets even more complicated. Somewhere along in here is the reason we have to adjust our calendar with that extra day every 4 years. * * R & R * * Last week I made some statements about the history of Rough and Ready without knowing a similar coverage would be: included in Kinyons' Northern Mines. Some people believe Kinyon is an absolute authority. But it is known that-the Riddles came to Rough and Ready in 1849, So ifthe Rev. Dunleavy didn't come until 1850, they couldn't have been first. The Rev. Dunleavy was elected in San Francisco in 1847 to Fremonts Council. Of course he could have gone on into Oregon afterward and have come back from there to Rough and Ready by 1850, -I shall keep reading and keep you posted. I spoke of water coming to Rough and Ready in the fall of 1851, Now T have been told. that there was another ditch earlier. It pos-. ers : ° Sees, ey iis 8 ans Sed Pee EY Tae: Oh a ‘ FY oP ce § Mel +’ ats fa AE ORE Re REAM KAEE LE 273-2934 sibly didn't actually come to town. And it didn't come out of Deer Creek. Possibly it was the ditch on the south side of the highway that at one time brought water along that hill from away up on Squirrel Creek. The more I read the more I find to read, I wonder if it will ever be possible to tell just which of such thingsdid come precisely first. Very few of the historical works we depend upon were written in those times. They weren't interested in carefully recording current events anyway. Thompson and West was. done in 1880 and should: be fairly dependable * **FRER** : Visit the Grange public party on Saturday night, March 27 at the hall at 8 p,m. With all the repair work the Grange is doing, the old front porch, under the hall, replacing some of the very bad siding, and eventually a new roof, they need money. Guess what they have discovered under the old iron roof — wood shingles, Always knew
there was no corrugated iron in this country in 1857. Since the-old hall is the community's only meeting place it behooves Crusade affects. Forest Service The Nevada City Rotary Club heard Hank Branagh, supervisor of the Tahoe National Forest, speak on the effects of the current ecological and environmental crusade on the activities of the U. S, Forest Service. Branagh told the Rotarians that the crusade's main focus in on pollution of our air and water, but many other aspects are involved, including the care and management of our forest land, He said the crusading public is insisting that the great natural assets of the forests, including beauty, be recognizto ed and safeguarded. The Forest'Service welcomes this interest, according toBranagh, It reflects longstanding opinions and judgments of public forest managers, and in general. supports our beliefs, and helps to give overall perspective to national forest management..Branagh said that in order to meet the needs and desires of various segments of the public on~a fixed amount of land, water and air, "we must manage our resources. by. mixing or combining uses to the best advantage of the people." Mr. James Cash Penney was 96 years old when he died and the owner of a chain of 1700 stores. He must have been able to sleep nights to reach that nice ripe , old age. His was the typical “ Horatio Alger story of poor boy ‘makes good. His first store was in Kennemer, Wyoming in 1902. We can't, by the wildest stretch of imagination claim him as a citizen of the Great Republic but for my thought of the week, let me point out that it was his policy which made him so successful. It was quite ‘Jengthy: and was called "original body of doctrine”, One point Strikes me as being the important one upon which all the others hinged. This was "to charge a fair profit for what we offer — and not all the ‘traffic will bear", This would solve inflation in a few short turns through the country's econhomy and wouldn't hurt anyone. It's just a simple christian doctrine. I remember when I was a kid .at school in Wichita, Kansas, There was'a sweet shop, in this case, a bakery, near the school. The baker specialized in things we kids liked and he really built up a big business, Pretty soon he got so he didn't need us. He started selling his sweets at about double the price. When we asked him about it his answer was "well maybe I only sell half as many but I still make as much". Greed, "all the traffic will bear", trouble with the world today "I always say". . * * R&R * LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON APPLICATION FOR VARIANCE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT Mrs, Jeanne M, Ingersoll has made application tothe Nevada City Planning Commission pursuant to Section 10 of Ordinance #277 of said City, for a variance pertaining to the property commonly known as 624 Spring Street, Nevada City, California 95959: that said property is located in an "R-2 Multiple Dwelling Zone", under said ordinance, and applicant has requested variance “To build an addition to the present structure which is presently set back from Spring .
