Nevada County's sheriff's office forms a complex operation.
With a staff composed of six
deputies, and a matron, the
county sheriff is charged with
county law enforcement, maintenance of county jail, service
of outside warrants, civil processes and the like. Besides,
there are the chores of delivery
f of the insane to state mental
hospitals and transporting pris= oners to state institutions.
Personnel of the staff includes
Wayne. Brown, sheriff; Max
Solaro, undersheriff; William
Mullis, Elmer Oates, Frank
Gallino, Harley Frink and Wesley Fair, deputies. Fair serves
in Truckee. Mrs. Effie Goering
is jail matron.
The county jail houses a daily
average of 15, andhasacapacity
of 22 to 24.A jail at Truckee
serves astemporary restraining
quarters until prisoners can be
transferred to the county jail in
Nevada City. These inmates have
to be watched, catalogued, segregated and fed. The kitchen of
the county hospital supplies
meals for the inmates. Many of
the jail chores are carried out
prisoner trustees.
Brown is the 29th man to
serve this area as sheriff. R. B.
Buchanan served in 1850 when
Nevada County was a part of
Yuba County, and John Gallagher
was the first sheriff of Nevada
County proper when it was
formed a hundred years ago
today.
Three sheriffs were killed in
the line of duty. W. W. Wright
was mistakenly killed by members of a posse while hunting
for a notorious bad man of the
early years here, Jim Webster,
following his escape from jail.
