Nevada county will spend $320 .
to find out ifthe soil at the county .
dump along McCourtney Road is .
suitable for a sanitary cut ane
fill operation.
Under cut and fill, a trench .
is dug, and each day's garbage .
is deposited in it. The garbage
then is covered by earth,
The present method at all Nevada county dumps_ is open
burning, and the county wants
to end that practice as a pollutioncontrol measure.
Public Works Director Harry
Hider requested $320 in general
fund money this week to have
test holes dug to determine the
dirt's depth. A county backhoe
will be used to make these test
holes,
The tests will determine how
far down a cut and fill operation
_ could go and still find dirt suitable for covering garbage. If
rock is found too close to the
surface, the idea of using the
county dump might have to be
abandoned.
Then, holes might be dug at
the Grass Valley Disposal Service facility nearby. And if that
doesn't work out, the county will
have to inspect sites which aren't
now dumps, something officials
hope to avoid because of the
almost certain uproar that would
ensue from neighbors.
