the fact that they found very few

mention the fact that a game
warden was trailing them!)
Saturday evening after a spaghetti dinner, the group saw slides
of marine life in various places
around the world. These were
shown by Dr. Hemphill.
’ Sunday the weather was even
more inclement. It rained all
day! But this couldn't stop our
adventuresome crew from NU.
They went to the Pigmy Forest
where they saw trees over 300
years old, yet only three or four
feethigh. This stunted growth is
caused by acidclay soil. Alongside the trees was manzanita six
inches tall. One of the students
reported that at this point it was
hard to see the manzanita because “there was six inches of
rain over everthing". This may
be an exaggeration, but we are
told that clay does not absorb
water too readily.
Later, and in spite of the rain,
some of the students accompanied
Mr, Soule back to the beach,
There they almost caught an
octopus which was reportedly
about five feet in expanse, Mr.
Soule, Robert Conant, and Tim
Knox struggled forsome time
with the octopus which had hidden under some rocks nearthe
shore. At one point Mr. Soule
had his hand on one of the tentactes of the: octopus, whichin
turn had its tentacles around Mr.
