Gray stands behind the pulp odist Church, surrounded by floral tributes for Easter Service. he Se it of the Nevada City MethRev. Gray was minister at the church from 1895 to 1897. The church was extensively damaged by fire in 1894. Church Burned Four Times The Nevada City Methodist Church has been restored and rebuilt fourtimes in its history due to fire, but the present $10,000 restoration project is the first major building project undertaken without the urging of fire since the church was moved to its present site in 1852. Originally, in 1851 the Nevada City Methodist Church occupied a portion of “the Broad Street Cemetery”. In 1852 the Rev. Adam Bland moved the church to its present site, and the congregation grew. TheRev. Bland was an -aggressive desciple of his religion, Church B oard chairman Robert McMasters is finding as he investigates the history of the church in preparation for a drive toraise funds for the restoration. The pastor noted that many of the men of his congregation walked to church each Sunday with their wives. He also noted that they left their wives at the door of the church and went into town. Rev. Bland devoted a portion of his sermon to this disregard of the merits of Sunday worship by a portion of the male population. Church records note that while repairing a fence after the sermon. “one of the men referred toin the sermon met him...and began to abuse him, threatening violence, Rev. Bland tried to get him to go away, but instead he undertook to soil the cloth of the man of peace. "Atthis, the hammer was dropped, and the man was seized in the giant preacher's hands, thrown to the ground (some say knocked down) and his head soundly butted on it, " the church records show. As the man fled, he yelled, "Yes, ___—_, you'll not only preach but you'll fight, will you?” The church history continues the story. "Forthis kind of treatment, not wanting anything more, the man had Rev. Bland _arrested, A trial was held, gamblers and all being on Rev. Bland‘s side, the result being a fine of five cents. " : Rev. Bland was still pastor when the church was completely destroyed by fire in 1856. . Again, on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1863, the church was completely destroyed by fire, Rev. J. B. Hill was pastor at the time.
