tit i +i} i Pines Are Planted — By USFS (See pictures page 5) The Nevada City District of the Tahoe National Forest has started planting young ponderosa and sugar pine seedlings ina 194-acre piece of property near North Columbia, it was revealed by Dis~trict Ranger Frank Sodolski. A U.S. Forest Service crew under the supervision of Forester Don Beardsley is planting in the Holden Springs area. The land was cleared of manzanita, scruboak, and other bush species last year, and the slash was burned in the fall, Sodolski said. The forester said it is important that the young seedlings be planted as early in the spring as possible after snow banks melt so they will benefit from the spring rains before they face the long summer drought. On this project, more than 80, 000 seedlings were rem oved from the U.S. Forest Service nursery at Placerville while still in the dormant stage. They were shippedin crates to local cold storage until planting time. The seedlings must be carefully handled so that roots do not getachanceto dry out. The roots of each seedling must be kept moist and covered at all times until each seedling is planted, Sodolski said. The Nevada City District has a program to clear and plant ap~ proximately. 200 acres of brushfields each year until all brushfields of the district are in timber production. Growing trees is like growing almost any other farming crop, Sodolski claimed, except the length of time necessary to ma~ture the crop is longer. Seedling trees require about 100 years of growing time before they can be harvested. During the periodthey are young trees, they must be protected from the natural enemies---insects, rodents, disease and fire. Sodolski said the soil in which the seedlings are being planted is excellent and after they become established, the trees should have rapid growth. $263,789 Low Bid A low bid of $263,789 was received last week by the California Division of Highways for construction of 1 1/2 miles of two-lane expressway on Highway 20 in Marysville from Sampson St, to the east city limit.
