sponsored by the chamber. :
Chamber directors abruptly
canceled the affair when it was
reported distances involved in
traveling would prevent officials from attending the dinner.
However, -a bit of .a local
furor arose when some persons
objected to the guest list being
limited to 200 persons and that
it originally excluded: women.
Directors hastened to explain
the limitation had been-necessary because of inability to
handle a larger crowd intheNe;vada City Elks clubrooms, They
said the invitations had been
issu-i to members of chambers of commerce, and that
women inadvertently had been .
excluded. .
R, S, Washburn, president of
United States Land Inc. in a
letter directed to the chamber
stated:
"Thank you for your invitation
to the dinner to be held on March
14, 1969. We appreciate your
considerate gesture but if any
appreciation is to be expressed
it should be by us.
"Since . we~ understand that
more residents of the
desire to attend the dinner than
can be accommodated, we would
like to invite all residents to a
benefit outing in May at Lake of
the Pines, instead ol taine your
guests at dinner,"
The letter continues with:
"We suggest that the event
utilize all the facilities of Lake
of the Pines and we will plan a
variety of day-long activites for
‘the entire family to enjoy. A
small fee could be charged by the
chamber for each family that
would include all entertainment,
golf, boating, swimming, and
other special events as wellasa
barbecue, All proceeds would
then be a donation for the preservation of the bridge."

Senior drivers’ record
destroys hazard myth
Many .drivers share the belief that the senior motorist has
no right to be .on the road because he's a hazard,
_This dates them, points out
the National Automobile Club,
being a myth of the past. What
better proof that the senior motorist deserves a respected
place on the road than his own
driving record?
Here are the facts, just the
facts,
A recent survey examined the
records of the total driver population in 30 states and the District of Columbia, found that senior citizens represented 7.4 per
cent of all drivers but were involved in only 4.8 percent of all
accidents, In fact, persons aged
65 and over averaged 37 per.
cent fewer accidents than would
exist if there proportion of accidents were in exact ratio to
their proportion of the driving
population,
Senior citizens averaged lowest of all age groups infrequency of injury-producing accidents, averaged 40 per cent
below their proportionate’ share
of the ‘driving population, In
frequency of fatal accidents,
however, they averaged just seven per cent less than their share,
Why this marked difference in
type of involvement? Could be
the answer lies in injured senior
citizens having a more difficult
time of it in recovering, thereby having more fatalities.
How: about another interesting
finding? Where they represent
a larger proportion of the driving population, seniors seem to
average better records. Rep—
resenting the highest such proportion of any state surveyed.
Minnesota's senior drivers went
on record with the best accident avoidance performance of
any age group, such fine performance that it ranked ror
third best among the states.
