is under no obligation to accept the plan when completed.
The701 Program has been
in existence since 1956, Elkins said, and California has
used the plan more widely
than ‘any other state.
Elkins estimated a cost for
preparing a county general
plan at between $8000 and
$20,000, depending on the
consultant hired. Of that
sum, the county would pay
one-third under the 701 Program.

My candidacy for the
school board stems from a
genuine interest in good education for our children.
Asa father and an unbiased
individual from a large urban
area ithasbeen my observation that the Nevada City
Elementary School District
is doing a very creditable job
with our children. I do not
want to see a decline in the
quality of education that we
are providing. For this reason
I whole heartedly endorse the
the proposed tax override on
which we shall soon vote.
At the same time, I very
strongly support even demand--careful use of taxpayers’ money.
I do not ask your confidence on the basis of what
changes I can bring to the
classroom. While I will be
keenly interested, the
teachers are far more qualified in this area. ,
I do promise to work as a
fellow resident-parent-taxJeanne Roese
The race in space has
brought a new focus on our
schools and they have drawn
severe criticism. The Nevada City Schools are good
and they could be better.
The emphasis on the 3 R's
has fluctuated in the past
several years to the detriment of the student. Schools
alsoneed a consistent discipline. As a parent of four
students, aged 16, 15, 11,
and 7, I am quite aware of
this and have a vital interest
in the schools now and for
many-years-to-come.
At the same time, I can
appreciate the importance of
using every dollar to the best
advantage. As taxpayers we
needthe assurance of the
wise use of money. The
Board of Education is your
personalrepresentation and I
would appreciate the opportunity to serve. :
payer toward continuing improvement in our educationalsystem and a safeguarding
of community funds.

For the past five years I
have had a natural interest
inthe Nevada City elementary schools because of my
four children. I have met
their teachers and other parents and I am familiar with
the problems they face.
I would like to help our
schools retain their present
high standards. I offer a few
ideas which I believe will
help to do this.
First I believe it is the duty
of the school board to keep
you, the voter, well informed-of the probtems which
face your schools and your
board. Iwould welcome your
questions and your advice.
Secondly, I believe that
teaching respect for authority is as much the school's !
responsibility as the parents’. .
They must work together to
establish this basic principle
of citizenship in our chil-.
dren.
Thirdly, Ibelieveit is the
duty of the board to encourage the teachers to study and
continually strive to improve
the general curriculum ‘offered by our schools. To insure that it is planned on a
solid foundation of basic
skills designed to reach all
learning levels.
