This week our r picture story is of a fine and ioajecnal:
long-time Nevada City family, the Grays and the
Ragons, The ancestors of Judge Verle "Puss" Gray. Most
of us will remember Ragon's Grove at the end of Grove
~ Street, later to become Redman's Grove~-the scene of —
many a N.C, Town benefit carnival and of a popular
out -door dance hall. The Nevada City High School
graduating class of 1926 held its Senior Ball there.Ihave read with great interest the Gray Family geneology andI quote the first two paragraphs of it as written
by Grandfather Thomas Benton Gray (and well documented) at the time he was principal of the Nevada City
. Washington Grammar School. Quote--"The Grays originally went to England with William the Conqueror in
1066. They were closely alliedto the Royal house of
England, and were near the Throne. Edward the Fourth
married Elizabeth Gray, the widow of Sir John Gray who
was slain at the second battle of St. Albans in 1461. Sir
Edward Gray married the daughter and heiress of Henry,
heir apparent of King William (from Nesbls Heraldry).
Mrs, Desire Gray Kent, daughter of Edward Gray was
the first woman to land at Ply mouth Rock from the
"Mayflower". The progenitor of our family in America
was JohnGray (designated the first). He moved from
England among the first settlers. He had six sons, had
been in the British Navy where he lost an arm. The
stump of that arm was a family tradition. He was a pensioner of England on half pay. The Lion Couchant was
the family crest.
