De ee ener Soares hice _ r Early churches History of Trinity By PHYLLIS L. SMITH The early history of Trinity Parish makes for interesting reading no matter to what faith or sect you may belong.. for it deeply inyolves the general development of the community known new as Nevada City. Trinity Parish was organized in 1855 by the Reverend W. H. Hill, who held his first services for the congregation in the Nevada County Courthouse. In 1863, perhaps the most disasterous of years for the City of Nevada, the Trinity Episcopal edifice was completed and then, a few short months later on Nov. 8, a great and overwhelming fire laid waste to the town and this chuch, among others just about as recently constructed throughout the town. consider the present structure, which has undergone a variety of repairs and refurbishments over the years, as one of Northern Californai’s most picturesque establishments for public worship. It was opened for this purpose on lower Nevada Street, on Nov. 2, 1873; under the rectorship of the Rev. A. P. Anderson, at a cost of $7,661.54, according to figures published by the Nevada County Hisorical Society in 1955. The chancel extension was added and special services were held in observance of that event on Dec. 19, 1899, the second Sunday in: Advent. The choir was moved down from the balcony at this service to lead the worship in song. the Lectern Bible was presented to the church on Easter Sunday in 1901. In August of 1905, the program of repairs undertaken were extensive and many general improvements to the building were noted in the church records. The exterior of the church was painted and the steeple and south sidé of the roof. was reshingled. Many items of repair were listed for the vestry room, vestibule and other interior areas. ' Special Jubilee services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 1905, during the annual convocation of the Missionary Jurisdiction of ‘Scramento which was entertained by this parish. In attendance were the Bishop, 22 priests and an appreciable . number of lay delegates. Then, happily, on Nov. 4, 1902 the lot for a rectory at the top of
Nevada street was donated to the parish by Mrs. R, M. Hunt. The year 1880 is used as an example of the extent of activity by this church and its faithful. At that time the membership was 40 in the church; and there were 55 scholars enrolled in its Sunday school. In the Historical Society bulletin for Nov. 1955, is found the following paragraph of interest to fact-seekers: ‘‘At this writing, the congregation is heralding the recent return of popular Rev. Cedric S, Porter as Rector. Son of Bishop Nel Mon. Sat: 8 to dark! i Porter, Sacramento Diocese, THE TRINITY PARISH was organized in 1855 by his first services in the Nevada County Courthouse. Porter returns to Nevada City where he served as Rector during the years 1941-46. Porter will assume the spiritual leadership of a good-sized congregation, one which has long been known for its active support of the church program. Trinity has been a center of excellent music for many years, boasting a modern pipe organ, a large and active choir, with a wide repertoire of liturgical and sacred music of a more general nature. A large Sunday school attendance is regularly reported, and there are many addditional and related activites for youth. sponsored by the church. The members of the vestry and St. Agnes Guild actively support many activities (Nugget Photo) throughout the church year.” Next week we shall explore the early experiences of those dedicated men and women who sought and estabished Nevada City’s First Methodist Church.. a story which begins in 1850 and which features family names familiar to all residents of this area for many years.
