Old Farmer’s Riddle: What’s the difference between here and
there? (Answer below.)
Ask the Old Farmer: Have
you ever heard that porpoises slip under drowning
sailors and carry them to
land? It is said” that sailors
will not kill porpoises.
J.W.B., Philadelphia.
We know of nothing that
might support that old suf perstition. Porpoises in their
natural state would not be likely to remain in the vicinity
of a swimming man. Merchant-seamen may at one time have
objected to the killing of porpoises, but whalemen killed and
ate them at every opportunity. In the absence of fresh meat,
the flesh of the porpoise was a very welcome change of diet.
Home Hints: Hamburgers can be made more juicy by adding a grated, raw
potato to the meat before cooking . .. Glycerin rubbed on a chocolate stain
will remove it... Riddle answer: The letter “‘T”’
