Field day on April 12 at UC’s field station A Field Day will be held at the University of California’s Sierra Foothill Range Field Station on Thursday, April 12th from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The station is near Brown’s Valley in Yuba County. A discussion on current research will be held, a tour of the station conducted and researchers from the University will explain the facilities. Topics to be covered include the utilization of feedlot manure as a supplement for range cattle and the early weaning of calves, which could improve future beef production. Land planning for the foothill area and the use of aircraft and satellites in monitoring the condition of the range land and plant development will also be discussed. The field laboratory conducts studies on current resources, and potentially renewable resources, and on_ the agricultural and recreation uses . of the foothill region. The field Station’s 5,800 acres range in elevation from less than 300 feet along the Yuba River to nearly
2,000 feet, and is representative of several million acres-in the foothill region. Current research is concerned mainly with livestock and rangelands but the management of all natural resources will occupy a major position in future research. Areas to be studied include: — Improvement of forage production, quality, and uses through vegetation-type con~_ Version, introduction of imroved plant species, grazing nagement, improved plant and animal nutrition, and more efficient nutrient cycling. — Maximizing production of animal protein from different kinds and classes of domestic animals, including cattle and sheep. “ — -Efficiency in water management and use — aspects of watershed management which influence water yield and quality, soil; stability and availability to domestic and game animals; aspects of irrigation water management related to more efficient use. — Determining the relationship of domestic animals and wildlife, including competition between domestic animals and wild game, parasite and disease relations, predatory-prey relations, and the effects of wildlife on forage production. — Studies of plant and animal ecology in areas grazed by domestic animals and in livestock-free areas. — Recreation potential resulting from increased public access to the Yuba River and the Englebright Reservoir. — Economic and studies. — Use as an ‘‘environmental education’’ classroom for university. students and the general public.
