In opening the face of the Gold Bank Tunnel and running on the vein, the fissure is found to be 30 feet wide at the point of beginning on the South Yuba river. The foot-wall véin, which is the one to be followed into the contact, carries a heavy gouge and clay selvage six inches thick and very wet. The vein is about seven feet thick. It is now estimated from what ig known of the formation, that the tunnel will cost from $9 to $14 a foot for the first two miles, which isthe distance thro’ the Gold Bank group, on which some good developments have been made this year, and to the Nevada City mine. The great criticism that will doubtless be° urged against this book is that the compiler did not go out of the field of school-book liter ature for inspiration.
