The Nevda City Still Caper is one such instance of buréaucratic pétti-forgery. Mr. Albert Merrill, a respected Nevada City businessman has displayed in his office win‘dow an antique copper still for over two years. This useless piece of ancient impedimentia lacks water jacket, copper coils and other-com= _ ponents néeded to make it operable. It couldn't have been used for the distillation of the fiery liquid any more than Aunt Sophy's teakettle. Across the street at Sven Skaars PioneerAntique: Shop is an even smaller: still likewise i unadorned with coils, water jacket, etc. Nei= ther still is for sale. Mr. Merrill's exhibit is simply window dressing in keeping with the © city's. historical past. Mr. Skaars "still" is. ticketed for the "49er" Museum: at the National Hotel. Enter the law in all its pragmatic majesty. Two agents from the office of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Office arrived to inform our local citizens that it is illegal to possess a a still of any description. Complaints had been received! (It would be interesting to force the ABC to produce the complainents .) The stills must be removed. Destroyed. At leasta. hole must be smashed in thebottom and and the spouts slit to make surethat they can never be used. The fact ‘that they are already useless is not sufficient. Local officials are quick to come to the defense of the unwitting victims. District attorney HaroldA. Berliner said, "If these two reputgble businessmen had any intention of manufacturing illicit booze, why would they put the equipment in their show windows?" But the ABC investigators were adamant. Warren Jones, special ABC investigator said there are strictrules concerning the possession of a still. The owners would be required tocut a hole in themand also split the spout leading to the (non-existant) coils. Said Sven Skaar, "I don't wantany state liquor agents punching holes in my antiques." We applaud Mr. Skaar's point of principle. A trip by not one but two investigators was unneccessary when a polite letter would have met with better results. If the state is really looking for stills they should go look back in the hills where they might find a live one. And after all is said and done, the Skarr "still" might be only amercury still froma gold mine. Anyway, its about as useful as a "still" as a common double boiler. If the ABC is going to confiscate all the pots and pans in Nevada County they do have a job on their hands. tL Ei deeseeg et eens Sven Skaar’ and his antique mercury still, County Taxes Due April 10 Second installment of Nevada County taxes are now due and payable, according to Marcella J, Carson, County Tax Collector, Mrs, Carson stated that if they are not paid before April 10, 1967, at 5 P.M, an additional six per ‘cent penalty and a three dollar per parcel cost of advertising charge will be added, Payments may be made at the office or by mail and checks should be made payable to Marcella J, Carson, Tax Collector, Any questions regarding taxes should be directed to the office, Room 101, Court House Annex, or by phoning 265-2461 Extension 207.
