Canada. have extended the deadlines for important benefits offered to Americans who served in the Canadian Armed Forces] ' during World War. I, it was announced by Veterans Service Of. . ficer H. E. Nolen. “ It was estimated some time ago by the Canadian Government that several hundred eligible Americans still had not filed for Canadian benefits. About. from 27,000 Americans served Canada during World War II. The benefits offered include veterans insurance and reestablishment credit. Deadlines have been extended till September 30, 1962, from the previous deadline “of next January 1; in the case of reestablishment credit, the deadline is 15 years after termination of service in the Canadian Special Force, or September 30, '1962—whichever is the later date. Virtually all persons who were ever eligible under the Canadian Veterans Insurance Act may now purchase this-pro ion, providing they do not ady have the maximum of $10,000 allowed on any one life. . ¥ Canadian veterans residing outside Canada are eligible for reestablishment credit, but may use it only for the purchase of veter. ans insurance. Additional ‘benefits for Canadian service veterans who live outside Canada include pension, treatment, an educational assistance for children‘of the war dead. However, such children may receive this assistance if they un+] dertake.suitable courses of study in Canadian educational institutions. ‘ Dividends Help Keep Up Pemiums More than a million vetérans who have GI life insurance policies are using their regular annual dividends to guard against the loss of their insurance, the Veterans Administration says. The VA announced that $253,500,000 in dividends would bé paid during 1960 to more than five million veterans an servicemen who hold participating GI insurance. GI policy holders may have these annual dividends held—with interest—by the agency as a credit to pay premiums monthly if the policy holders fail to pay them before the end of the 31-day period. This procedure is followed automatically if the policy holder does not request other disposition of his annual dividends, the VA explaine, but the policy holder has two other options. . He may use his’ annual dividends to pay policy premiums in advance, or he may request the VA to pay his dividends in cash, the VA said. Holders of permanent plan policies have a third option. They . may authorize the VA to hold annual dividends on deposit with inon such dividends left on deposit, however, are taxable. S. for. permanent residence, the Immigration Seryice may eliminate cretain requirements, including the waiting period. and residence requirements. Ex-servicemen -of the U:: 8. forces who have had three years of honorable active service during any other period are entitled to the same consideration for citizenship if they, file application while in the service or within six months thereafter. Former citizens’ who. lost their ‘citizenship by-entering the Armed. World War Il, and because of oath of allegiance to that nation, may usually regain their citizenship by taking the prescribed oath of allegiance to this country before any district court of the U. S., or any court having naturalization jurisdietion, _ Application for citizenship must be filed at the nearest office of the Imimigration and Naturalization Service. Vets Have Choice Approximately 40,000 veterans in this area receiving pensions from the Veterans Administration are to be given their choice of the old or a new pension plan. A pamphlet explaining the plans. and a card on which the pensioner may indicate his choice will be enclosed with the March 1 pension check. The new regulations resulted from a conference in Washington, D.C., early Jast month between officials of the district and the Interior Department. President Sam Anderson of the district telegraphed Secretary Fred A. Seaton that the district’s board of directors has adopted a resolution directing compliance with the new regulation.
