Different laws apply to different taxpayers, depending upon Controller. Alan Cranston, chairIf you are a single person, you are required to file a state return if your net income is $1,500 of more. But if your gross income is $5,000 or more, you must file a return regardless of the amount of your net income. If you are married, you are required to file a state return if your net income, plus the net income of. your. spouse, equals $3,000. or more. But if your gross income, plus the gross income of your spouse ,totals $5,000 or more, you must file a return regardiess of the amount of your het income. « Whether you are single or married depends upon your status on the last day of the taxable year. Beware of these two problem areas: _ An interlocutory decree of divorce does not return a person to single status. That person must file as a married person, until a final divorce decree is obtained. The marital status of a taxpayer or his spouse who has died during the taxable year is determined as the date of death. County Water Resources Board Meets March 8 During the period 1957-1959, the California Department of Water Resources made an inventory of the uses of surface water in the watersheds of the Yuba and. Bear. Rivers, states €. E. Gassaway, chairman of the Nevada County Water Resource Board. A diversion by a district is considered as a unit and parties using only purchased district water are not included in the inventory as individuals, In order to make the inventory as accurate as possible, these data will be available for review by diversion owners in the southern portion of Nevada County on March 8, 1960; in the Memorial Building, Grass Valley, at 1 p.m. A meeting for the diversion owners in the North San Juan area will be held at a later date. Engineers from the department will be present to answer questions and make*any necessary corrections. Notices ofthe first meeting have been sent to all diversion owners of record. Anyone who has not received a notice but. has a diversion which was marital status, according to State . i d on Febru‘Hiome of Dor‘Grass Valley. ‘Worth, director of the County Welfare Department, read a notice from the current County Supervisors Associar. This notice gave the information that the Merit System Advisory Committee of the State. Welfare Board adopted a sweeping recommendation for a three step across the board increase of minimum beginning salary rates for all classes of welfare department employees in merit system counties. This will affect only the low-paid counties, aS many counties are already paying starting salaries above the legal minimum. The raises are needed to attract qualified people and to reduce the ‘high personnel turn-over caused by -low salaries in some welfare departments. Celebrate Arbor Day By Planting A Tree. If you need an excuse to plant a tree, you'll never find a hetter one than March 7. For this is not only Arbor Day, it is also Luther Burbank’s birthday. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. By that time settlers had chopped down most of the trees in that state either for building their homes or for firewood, Still other trees had been destroyed ‘to clear the land for farming. You could wander for miles over the western plains with nary a tree in sight. A Nebraska newspaper man by the name of J.. Sterling Morton came up with the idea/of Arbor Day as a method of correcting this sorry situation. The suggestion rapidly gained favor in other parts of the country,” idle during 1957 and which meets the minimum size conditions, is cordially invited to .attend this meeting and make known: this fact. Nevada County Water Resources Board through Chairman ‘Gassaway urges all people diverting water independently (not through a district) to attend this meeting to ascertain: that your diversion is properly accounted operated in or was temporarily for..
