It is planned to move th boat Monday. See photos on page 8 and 12, Takes a lot to move a new cement boat The Ferro-Maid in Nevada City has been at home on Sacramento Street for two years, It is still at home after several efforts were made to move the large craft Friday. The cement boat was built by _ the Rex Beck family which plans to launch ft as soon as possible. They plan on the commercial fishing season which starts in six weeks, The boat is outfitted for five persons to live comfortably, is 44 feet long, and weighs in the neighborhood of 14 18 tons, It's a long way to the Pacific Ocean. Friday's efforts moved the boat from the Beck's backyard to the front yard and here it still sits. The M, E, Kanyon Co, of Napa brought an outfit to town Friday for the specific purpose of moving the boat. Once it was put on the flat bed trailer, the semidiesel truck failed to move it, A loader was brought: to the Co., hooked on to the truck and the boat moved. But the weight buckled the front wheels of the trailer and other problems followed. After the wheel was removed, and the outfit straightened, the California Highway Patrol came on the scene, An inspection by the CHP resulted in -the canceling of the Beck's moving permits, The trailer was declared as unsafe, The Beck's have removed the boat from the trailer and blocked it up on wood. A building moving firm in Willows was contacted and they agreed to move the boat Monday. If all goes well, the boat will move through Marysville, Woodland, Dixon to Suisun near Fairfield for launching in the Sacramento river. Beck will outfit the boat for commercial fishing and he and his two oldest sons will fish in the Coos Bay, Ore, area. Construction of the cement -*-seene ‘trom “Robinson ‘Timber’ ‘boat took the family two years. 180 widening in Auburn area to kegin soon Freeway construction will begin in:the next few days near
Auburn where a four-mile section of Interstate 80 is to be widened from four to six lanes during the next 1-1/2 years, The project begins near the east city limit of Auburn and extends almost to Clipper Gap. Two lanes for each direction will be kept open during construction however there will be some shifting of traffic from one side of the freeway to the other as work progresses, The contractor, Gibbons and Reed Co, of Salt Lake City, will clear the highway corridor in preparation for later earthmoving and interchange construction. : The eastbound, or Renobound, roadway will be widened and paved first. Then all traffic will be put on the new work and the westbound roadway will be reconstructed. George Ellis of Woodland is resident engineer on the $6.7 million project. : Gelatt tells trustees of teacher meetings How the administration and trustees should respond to the request by Nevada Union teachers for a 15 per cent raise was discussed by the board in executive (closed) session Monday. Supt.. Gerald Gelatt asked for the closed meeting to tell trustees what he has learned during two meetings with teacherst association representatives and to glean the board members' thoughts on what to offer when he and the teachers "meet and confer" again. There was no announcement afterward as to what positions were taken by the board. Closed meetings of local government agencies normally are allowed only to hire or fire personnel and, through an attorney general's opinion, for matters involving lawsuits, However, an amendment to the state law now allows local boards to hold closed sessions with their representative on ' eimployd salary ‘nepotiations,: ‘* * j In NU's case, that representative is Gelatt. If he and the teachers' representatives reach agreement, the amount of pay increase will be brought before the board in open session for approval. There was some indication that the salary talks will take longer than had been expected before the teachers asked for 15 per cent more, Gelatt noted he had laid out a tentative time schedule calling for approval of next year's salaries this week. However, he said Monday this will be delayed "to give more time to talk about it." The trustees did take one action concerning the total teaching staff. On Gelatt's recommendation they approved rehiring 78 teachers and three administrators, The 78 teachers included 60 who have been on tenure and 11 who will remain probationary a year, The final seven, all who will have firstyar amet ae We Wek Po in aE RIE poping canny
