Nominated For Five Oscars Page 17.
This week's column (except the movie review) is of pictures and
comment for that rare animal---the historical researcher--pouring
over bound volumes of the Nevada County Nugget in the Nevada
City Free Library on March 5, 2064. If you want to see these rare
bits of fauna, visit the library any afternoon and see them minutely
examining the Nevada Transcript of 100 years ago. On March 5,
2064 there will be a nervous college student working on his masters
thesis Gold Mining In Nevada City 200 years ago and this student will want toseea picture of a miner to describe, and what pay
dirt he will strike when he comes to this column a century from
now. I also know (by my mail and phone calls) that previous photos
of miners published in Fool's Golds are very popular with today's
readers. A mine they knew perhapsa picture of Grandpa. So here
we go for good old history's sake: 3 wonderful mine groups loaned
the Nugget. from the Marie Jeffery collection: No. 1, The Merrifield ‘Mine taken in 1883 with most identifications under the picture; No. 2, TheReward Mine in 1899 that produced, besides much
gold, a President of the United States, Herbert Hoover; and Picture
No. 3, name or date of mine unknown, note the Cousin Jack lunch
pails for tea and pastie, and also the candles.

The action concerns three old
country Italian families and their
first generation children caught
inthe world of loneliness of New
York City. What fine robust Italian
families they are as the conflict
when boy meets girl develops.
Particularly good is the scene
when the mother of the pregnant
daughter finds out what's bugging
her girl. Mama goesto bed in excitable Italian emotional pattern and the parish priest is brought in
to try and square the problems.
Natalie Wood is great in the role of Angie suffering from her mo-~
ment of disgust. What Natalie says with her eyes alone shows the
great actress she is. Love, hate, revulsion, happiness--all with
those-wonderful brown eyes. Steve McQueen plays an entirely understandable role as the guy who really believes that love to a man
is a thing apart. (But ‘tis a woman's whole existence. ) 1 generally
don't like to tell the climax but you know all along that love will
triumph. OK for your kids if they are over 16. Recommended!
