"THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON"

NU NEWS

"Two bits, four bits, six bits,
a dollar; All for Nevada Union
stand up and hollar. "
That's the most common yell
“at pep assemblies. It's funny to
_see how many stand up then, but
how few cometothe games. Yes,
*good old NU is just overflowing
with school spirit!
The prime example of this occurred last Friday. The night before the Miners had played one
game of the Placer Tournament.
This tournament is supposed to
be about the biggest thing of the
basketball season. Friday we were
togotoAuburn and play a game.
We had a chance to get the sportsmanship trophy at that game.
Of course, NU students were so
excited about this that not enough
people signed up to fill one
-rooter's bus. It seemed that the
only people in the school who
cared what happened at the game
were the boys on the team and the
girls in the pep club.
The Pep Club had recently conducted a fairly successful white
shirt drive. Many of the girls took
home several shirts and ironed
them so that there would be
enough shirts to keep everybody
at the game in white. In Mrs.
Cardin's room, an ironing board
was set up so that all the shirts
could be finished before the
game. Not all these shirts were
needed though.

Where Has All The Spirit Gone?
The rooter's bus was only “about
2/3 full, And not too many kids
came by car, And not all the
rooters had white shirts or wanted
to wear them. I suppose for the
small group of rooters the cheering was pretty loud. At least
things were better than last year.
Last year NU had about 20.
rooters. The team we played had
1 bus loads! The season is over
for this year. Next year, I hope
WE have the 7 bus loads!

Spreading mats of golden yellow along roadsides and in open
fields, this early-riser of Spring gives a gay air to our highways to
herald the coming of summer. Upon closer scrutiny one is fascinatedto find each individual flower is composed of three odd-shaped
inflated sacs, set off by a protruding dark purple tube extending beyond the tops of these sacs. A branching plant 4 to 10 inches high,
the herbage, particularly the bracts and stems are reddish. The
leaves are pinnately divided into filiform divisions, giving a fernlike appearance. These are a close'telative of the well-known Owl's
Clover, being of the same genus,
These are very abundant on the plains of Sacramento and San
Joaquin Valleys and may be found locally along the Marysville
highway upon leaving the Grass Valley city limits (known as Hell's
Half Acre) and also abundantly onthe way to Auburn. A long
blooming period makes it a desired addition to the beauty of our
roadsides, starting in Marchand lasting through May and sometimes
even later. von

Ask any ten people, “What is
your favorite season?" and at least
seven will answer, “Spring!”
For over six months of every
year all the glories of spring are
within reach of us lucky dwellers
in the Mother Lode country. All
we need do is drive to the elevation where this great roadshow of
natureis performing. «+ ~ --One of our earliest expeditions,
in late February or early March,
in this annual game of "Follow
the Spring," takes us west on state
highway 20 tothe Beale AFB turn-’
off where we jog left, then right
again, and skirt the northern edge
of this big military reservation.
We call this country “the
moors". It hassome quality about
it that is, to us, reminiscent of
Sherlock Holmes, and we always
ex pect to see the Hound of the
Baskervilles come bounding toward us over the next ridge.
Although we've yet to meet up
withthis character on our moors,
we usually find at least one big
flock of sheep and numerous
small herds of cattle grazing in
hundred-acre fields of tiny wildflowers--red maids, alfileria,
tidy-tips and a great variety of
other Compositae, some of the
last remnants of the 500-mile exKNOW NO
