GATHERING MOSS Beautiful Beale (Continued From Page 18) panse of these gold and ivory daisies that covered the Great Valley of California a hundred years ago. The song of the meadowlark is everywhere, and sometimes great flocks of red-winged blackbirds are mating in the blackberry jungles of the boglands, zooming across the sky like great swarms of bees. If the rains have been copious and closely spaced, the grass and wildflowers may grow a foot high on this gravelly soil. However, most years this carpet does not exceed six or eight inches before the rapidly dropping moisture level and dry valley winds bring everything to maturity. Often by April this rolling land is brown once more, As we drive farther west the land flattens out and to the left Beale's great birds, the B-52s, break the skyline beside a runway. At this point a sign shows the way to Hammonton. The world's largest gold dredge is at work here right now, gobbling up the old town itself and disgorging it in great piles of cobblestones and gravel. Spring is making itself felt even here, where poppies and lupines decorate some of the older gravel mounds. North to Oroville and south to Auburn dozens of little side roads branch off U.S. 99E into the green foothills where spring comes early. Grand old California farmhouses, draped in climbing roses and wistaria, dot the landscape. Clumps of flowering quince and acacia mark ¢he sites of other homes long abandoned. This is marginal land for farming, andit is beastly hot in summer, butright now it has a peaceful beauty that is almost overwhelming.’ Here you can feel spring in everything that lives and grows and scampers, and the hard winter-is-only a memory. simplicity ..~~ ready to serve you day or night BERGEMANN Funeral Chapel 246 Sacramento St. Nevada City coll 265-2421 Baseballers Hit The Road Sierra College's baseball team willhit the road for a week starting March 10.
