For those visiting the Commercial Street area of Nevada
City, an interesting building to
explore is the old South Yuba
Canal Company’s Office at the
foot of Main Street, opposite the
Shell Oil Station. The Nevada
City Chamber of Commerce
occupies the main floor whilé a
Bicentennial Museum has been
effectively arranged upstairs.
Built in 1855, the oldest
building now standing in Nevada Dog
City, it first housed a crockery
and book store. Doctors Robert
and Harvey Hunt had offices on
the second floor, and A.A.
Sargent, one of Nevada county’s
most emminent pioneer
attorneys began his practice
’ there. After the fire of 1863, the
structure was left standing with
just four walls. It was then that

the South Yuba Canal Company
took it over and. rebuilt the
‘interior to suit their needs.
Headed by James Whartenby,
the company constructed
reservoirs, among
Fordyce and Lake Spaulding,
and dug a vast and intricate web
of ditches which furnished water
to the hydraulic mines along the
South Yuba River, Nevada City,
and into the You Bet and Red
areas.
The Nevada City Council with
the aid of a grant, restored the
building.a few years ago, and a
committee headed. by Peter
Hoffman, selected appropriate
lamp fixtures and colors for the
interior.

committee headed by Miss
Rebecca Miller, the~
Bicentennial Museum came into
existence this past year.
Cases furnished by the county
from the old Nevada General
Hospital were carefully hauled
up through the windows at the
front and back of the building
by ropes and ladder. Altogether,
six cases were placed in the two
rooms by this tug and pull
method, the brawn being
furnished by Roman Rozynski,
Allen Davies and Bill Wilbur.
Most of the exhibits are pre1915, and one of the most
interesting is a flag that was
presented by the ladies of Grass
Valley to the first train from
Colfax to Nevada City in May,
1876. It is the gift of Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Rowe. !
