For those visiting the Commercial Street area of Nevada City, an interesting building to explore is the old South Yuba Canal Company’s Office at the foot of Main Street, opposite the Shell Oil Station. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce occupies the main floor whilé a Bicentennial Museum has been effectively arranged upstairs. Built in 1855, the oldest building now standing in Nevada Dog City, it first housed a crockery and book store. Doctors Robert and Harvey Hunt had offices on the second floor, and A.A. Sargent, one of Nevada county’s most emminent pioneer attorneys began his practice ’ there. After the fire of 1863, the structure was left standing with just four walls. Headed by James Whartenby, the company constructed reservoirs, among Fordyce and Lake Spaulding, and dug a vast and intricate web of ditches which furnished water to the hydraulic mines along the South Yuba River, Nevada City, and into the You Bet and Red areas. The Nevada City Council with the aid of a grant, restored the building.a few years ago, and a committee headed. by Peter Hoffman, selected appropriate lamp fixtures and colors for the interior. ON \ y 4 them,. committee headed by Miss Rebecca Miller, the~ Bicentennial Museum came into existence this past year. Cases furnished by the county from the old Nevada General Hospital were carefully hauled up through the windows at the front and back of the building by ropes and ladder. Altogether, six cases were placed in the two rooms by this tug and pull
method, the brawn being furnished by Roman Rozynski, Allen Davies and Bill Wilbur. Most of the exhibits are pre1915, and one of the most interesting is a flag that was presented by the ladies of Grass Valley to the first train from Colfax to Nevada City in May, 1876. It is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rowe. ! THE OLD MINER SAYS .. “IN ’75, CHOOSE, DRIVE, BE ALIVE!” A) =\ CHP academy previewed in NC Nevada City Rotarians have had a word preview of the $14 million new California Highway Patrol Academy under construction in the Bryte area in Sacramento. John T. Voss, a CHP officer in charge of the Long Range Section, was luncheon speaker for the club last week. Work has been progressing on the academy on 412 acres since 1972. It is anticipated it will be open in July of 1976. The CHP officer described the high speed training program of driving cars under all types of adverse conditions. The present 16 week training program, soon to be increased to 20 weeks, teaches driving under all conditions, ethics, criminal law, mathematics to computeskid marks and other techniques. Sixteen college credits are. earned \when the course has been completed successfully. Voss said the cost for each student patrol officer is about $12 thousand. ae The new academy will have facilities for housing and food for 400 trainees. : The academy also tests vehicles for patrol use to determine which are the best for the CHP.
