4 the Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, March 6, 1968 ‘A bit o’ nosh’ British style? By Ruthanne Meyer There are all sorts of beliefs that Americans hold of life in Britain. One of the most common one hears about is that the British "boil" their food. I can honestly say that I can not remember having eaten even one boiled meal. I would suppose that this belief came from the fact that the meals are very bland and unimaginative, In Britain, it's terribly expensive to be a connoisseur of food. In this country that raises less than half of the total food consumed by its in-. habitants, one could readily see how import costs would raise ‘NOT QUITE SPRING YET: but it sure looksthat way. Putting aside the food itself for the moment, the buying of food in Britain is an experience that no one should pass up. One may put himself into quite a dither trying to explain
to an English shopkeeper what she wants, -It's probably best to either learn the British terms first before going out on her own, or else take a‘native along with her to act as an interpreter. On Fridays, merchants set up stalls and boxes of produce along the sidewalk to hawk foods and textiles, Pre-packing has not yet invaded the stronghold of the fishmonger and greengrocer. Housewives may pick goods from the curbside barrows and select fruit and vegetables from openair stalls. The famed market day is held as in the middle ages. One must be careful when eating "out" in England. If he's a person who enjoys nearly any type of food, there's little need for concern; but for the unsuspecting consumer, a dish of food by the same name, may more often than not be surprisingly and very often disagreeably dissimilar to what he had expected. The fish and chips shops are spotted everywhere. The smell is elegant, and sinfully tempting, and the fish is quite tasty after one peels off the grease saturated breaded layer which encases it. It seems that chips (French fries) are served with everything from the common hamburger (which is a poor example of such) to an omelet or a plate of baked beans and fried tomatoes. As I had been warned, the coffee was disastrously strong, but the British have a neat way of mixing the strong brew half and half with steamed milk to make a not-so-bad "capuccino" or "cafe au lait." In an English restaurant, one can always pick out an American He's the one who so methodically switches his eating utensils from hand to hand in order to cut and then eat. So as not tobe soeasily recognized, he experiments with the British two-handed method (fork in left and knife in right) which, done by the unpracticed hand, may turn out to be quite a@ messy business, Notable cooking has yet tobecome one of Britain's strong points. Among the numerous great people who have hailed from England, I have yet tohear of a chef who has even attempted to immortalize British cooking. It can't be done, and I would —. venture to say won't be done. COMPLETE SUPPLY OF BUILDING MATERIAL Ra YUBA RIVER LUMBER CO. Town Talk G.V. 265-4521 Downieville Yard 289=3351
