Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1839. Nevada county -elaims special attention as one of the few counties of Cualiforniain which the three principal industries. of the State—mining, agriculture and horticulture—are extensively carried on side by side. The county. is naecessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary a considerable distance, and crossing its extrémre eastern end, while the Nevada County Narrow Guuge Railroad intersects its central portion, extending north from-Colfax to Nevada City and passing through Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a trifle north of the centrai line of the State, and extendsfrom: the Sacramento valley _on the west to and beyond the summit of the Sierra Nevada. In the western portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, and the surface consists of gently sloping hills and ridges with here and there large sized tracts of comparatively level land: In the central section is the upperpart of the horticultural bélt, and here also are most of the great quartz and gravel mines which have since pioneer days been yielding sucb vast quantities-ef gold. The eastern extremity is very mountainous in character, the principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceshipping and grazing. About 250,090 acres of land are contained in the horticultural beltof the county, which includes the townships of: Nevada, Grass Valley, Rough and Ready and Bridyeport. A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. Fruits and vegetables maturing early, or requir ing a long and warm~season, thrive particularly well ontands-facing to the south where the rays of the sun have LOCAL DIRECTORY. Meadow Lake district, which in the sixties experienced a Tétoarka le boom. which collapsed us suddenly as it caine because of the failure of any of the processes then known to separite the gol! from the base metals contained in the rock, was-during the past summer a@ scene of renewed activity because of a syndiéate having gone in there and partially demonstrated that the ores are reducible when properly treated, That is peculiarly the ‘‘snow belt” of the county, being at the summit of the Sierra -Nevada, When ihe winter storme are over; the camp, now hibernating, will come out. of its shell. As to the towns of the county, Grass Valley, with her population of 6000, is enjoying. marked prosperity because of the success of quartz mining there, which was never giving such large returns as now. Nevada City, the county seut, is laboring under somewhat ofa depressien so far as business is concerned, because of such sethacks as the stoppage of hydraulic mining, wage conflicts in one or two of the largest quartz mines and a reduction of force in those and two or three other mines. But it is safe to say that Nevada City, as well as the other towns in the upper part of the county which have been hurt by the debris trouble, will in a comparatively short time be more prosperous thandjever. The county’s,richness in resources is the source of admiration to all, acqudinted with it, and shrewd Easterners in search of homes are quietly coming -in and “buying farming and. fruit ‘lands, which are obtainable here much lower prices than are wanted for Snow Point.
