Se ee ‘Friendly native’ program used to increase tourism Ringing the cash register to the tune of $30 million is the name of the game -tourist trade. "This is what our program is all about", said Arthur W. Moss, guest speaker at the Placer County Chamber of Commerce meeting in Auburn last week, Moss is executive director of Club 20 which promotes Colorado West through a "Friendly Native" program. The Friendly Native program has been in existence for four years and is considered the best tourist promotion program inthe United States, What makes it the best? The $30 million dollar figure which has been placed on top of the regular income from tourist trade dollars. Moss explained the complex system used in 13 counties in western Colorado which covers 40,000 square miles, This is the unpopulated portion of Colorado. Moss was the first to admit when the program started "we made many mistakes," but it caught fire last year, he said. The key for the Club 20 program is to keep the tourist in the area for just one more day. This keeps the tourist there in many cases, for many days. This is accomplished througt the Friendly Native program which means just that. Businesses that come in contact with the traveler e geared to be friendly and t out off the road spots of interest to the area visitors. It works. Moss ‘said the key to the program hinges on the individual running it and he stressed individual, "A to the communities in and doesn't charge the } Each county chamber does c tribute $25 a year tothe project: Businessmen and their employes such as service station attendants are instructed on the Friendly Native program. This includes how to greet a visitor and how to be pleasant and cheerful. Moss said the opening greeting to a visitor makes an everlasting impression. “hese persons are often looking over an area and are open to suggestions on what to do and when. The person greeting the traveler must know his area and is told to be alert. You don't suggest a family with five kids . in this area to train as LIVESTOCK BUYERS LEARN TO BUY CATTLE, HOGS AND SHEEP at sale barns, feed lots and ranches. We prefer to train men 21 to 55 with livestock experience. For local interview, write age, phone, address and background to: NATIONAL MEAT PACKERS TRAINING 910.15th Street, Dept. CA-612 Sacramento, Calif. 95814 take in the Western Group play~ ing at the corner bar. Moss said the key is listening tothe person and finding out what he likes to do. The counties have ele sheets of the area and are~ familiar with the other counties. They work toward directing the tourist into another county -not in the immediate area. This keeps the traveler going in one big circle and it's a program designed to keep the traveler traveling in Colorado West. For instance if a businessman in Auburn learns that a family likes to lake fish, he suggests Gold Lake in Sierra county and gives them the information on the area and points out campgrounds. A person in Sierra county likes to fish for bass -Collins Lake in Yuba county is pointed out. A person is interested in historic gold mines; in Yuba City the Grass Valley area is pointed
out, etc., etc. . It's a revolving circle but to keep that tourist there that day longer is keyed on the person who makes the contact. Fe must know the offbeat places and must be friendly to the visitor. Moss said the news media are a big help to the traveler in Colorado West. The radio stations which drivers listen toare constantly using fillers broadcasting Friendly Natives. "Stop at a Friendly Native sign and explore Colorado West," they are told. Newspapers also carry fillers of places to explore and copies are left at all motels and key points for the tourist family to read, Regular classes are held. Employes are sent to attend the sessions on company time.
