NC And TNF--A
Long Story
Continues
If any new "welcome" need be expressed
by Nevada City tothe headquarters staff of
Tahoe National Forest; now might be the
time to express it.
However, after half a century of close
association with the town, . the forest
service should know that Nevada City will
continue to value its presence at the new
GoldReef site as it has valuedits presence
on Banner Road--and before that, at the
Elks building.
It is not only the fact that the forest
service has over fifty permanent employes
at its headquarters, spending over halfa
million dollars locally each year--it is not
only this that Nevada City values.
For equally valuable to NevadaCityis
the contribution to the active life of the
community made by the outstanding
citizens whoare forest service employes.
They are fine people and good neighbors,
and fine people and good neighbors are
the heart and soul of a community.
The community should know that the
mayor, the city council, the city attorney,
the special, mayor's committee, the
the chamber of commerce, the title company
--all worked countless extra hours, day
and night, to aid the forest service in its
quest for a new headquarters site in Nevada City. It was a remarkable community
effort, and-the community stands to gain
from it immeasurably inthe years to come.
Andwhenwe say "community, " we include
the headquarters staff of the Tahoe forest.

THE WASHINGTON STORY PART 3
Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happinegss..
Teresa McCulla, later to become the mother of Telford and Elmer Oates, was reading the Declaration of
Independence, asshe had on every 4th ofJuly in Washington. She wore a white starched embroidered dress. Her
pigtails were tied with bright red bows and her high button
shoes had been bought at Helgeson's Dept. Store by her
mother, Mary. Teresa's young voice rang out loud and
clear. .When in the course of human events
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness..those words doas well as any to
describe Washington when it was a thriving mining town on the South Yuba..a
happy town for its 110 years of history,
and where liberty andthe rights of others
were paramount. Teresa McCulla spoke
the words for Washington.
The mining journals record that the Washington and
Jefferson Co. , believing that the Yuba flowing through the
townsite wasrich in gold nuggets, diverted the Yuba into
flumes. Derricks were used to lift the big boulders from
the river bottom. Hundreds of Chinese, knee high in
water, stacked the smaller boulders at the rivers edge.
The project was a failure and Washington was abandoned.
But only for a short time. Sturdy miners pushing ever
forward up the streams re-established the town and while
many a Nevada County mining camp rose and fell Washington continues to this day. No gold is being mined in
the once great workings of Nevada City and Grass Valley
but intiny Washington the golden harvest continues by
rubber suited skin divers and their water vacum-like
suction equipment.
Back to our 4th of July. The Washington Brass Band, under the direction of
Philip Goyne, is being applauged wildly.
Young Dick Goyne is the drummer boy.
Phil Bradley, down from the Spanish mine,
has just been brought up to the platform
tobe awarded first prize for winning the
foot race. ‘Tom Carrol] is flexing his
muscles, and the next event will be his
hammer throwing.
For as everyone who ever lived in
Washington or who ever visited there
knows, itwasafuntown and still is. In
the winter sledriding, snow shoeing, and
tobogganing were the sports. Dances
were special affairs.
Washington's ( and Nevada County's ) first family are
the McCullas they trace the California family tree to
1849. The joining of the Brimskills and the McCullas
brought to Nevada County fine pioneer blood as the
children grandchildren and great granchildren hold high
the family prestige. Donna McCulla Bennett and her
brother Ed McCulla ( now living on Walrath Ave, NC )
spent the happiest years of their lives in thé place they
call home Washington. Their mother was born there
in 1857.
This Paradise-on-the-Yuba is remembered for its mines: Artic, Spanish,Eaglebird, Gray Eagle, Baltic, Maybert, Gaston, Champion, Blue Bell, Blue Jay, Mt.
View, Old German and the Ormond’.
It is remembered for its Doctors:' Foutz,
Hyde, Tickell, Freeman, Proshold, and
Dumileau.
It is remembered for the Chinese who
Came in search of gold, worked hard yet
remained a people apart with their own
‘gambling, Joss. House and cemetery.
There was the favorite Ah Yu, choked one
night by a burly Slavonian, who thereby
ldst his voice, and never spoke again.
A town isremembered by its school teachers: Iva Stenger
Williamson, A gnes O'Connell, Fanny Schwartz, Mary
Grimes, William La vy, Arthur Ball, Arthur O'Connor,
Sadie O'Donnell, Mary Jones Wallis, BonnieJones, Madge
Harding.
And-who-were more important than the postmastersTom Redmayne, ‘Charlie Worthley, Lucy Rogers, May

climate, the gold in the canyons, the
trees. It is a recreation area unlimited.
There's anair of seclusion and gentle
peace ---and possibilities. And overall
is the soft, enveloping mantle of history,
& history lending greatly to the mightiness
of Nevada County and California.
