No knowing what else to do, I have written the Governor in accordance with the enclosed copy, and hope that some action may be taken to modify the route, I congratulate you upon your attitude and effective editorials. Very truly yours, Carroll Searls. May 2, 1960. Dear Governor Brown: My attention has lately been called to the proposed construction of the Freeway by the State of California to and through Nevada City. It is astonishing to see the amceunt of destruction which the contemplated route will impose on the City. ’ Iam only one of a group of native born and outlanders who have learned to love Nevada City for its historic simplicity, its. beautiful setting and its loyal and kindly people. I share their concern at the havoc and confusion about to. be caused by the inexorable TELEGRAM SENT MAY 6, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC MANY PE®PLEIN GRASS ALTOGETHER OR DELAY SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN VADA CITY TY NUGGET REPLY RECEIVED MAY 6-_ CONSTRUCTION OF FREE TOR STATE FREEWAY PLEDGE The following telegrams were sent and received in Nevada City\on Friday, May 6. Mayor Carr placed himself solidly behind the present freeway route, cafling it "Progress". He suggested moving the Ott building and chopping down the hundred year old sequoia tree that annually serves. the city as its Christmas Tree. One tree shouldn't stand in the way of progress, he said. Carr received support fromBeverly Barry in the audience who, favored the downtown freeway route. Numerous others from the audience spoke, all opposed to the downtown route. The four councilmen each jindicated a desire to allow full public expression on the issue, andto follow the dictates of the majority. Councilman William Mul-. lis moved that the Highway Commission be asked to review the routing through Nevada City. He explained to the council that the intervening years since original adoption of the route has given people time to think over the various aspects conhected with the freeway and the city. Mullis explained his move Was to bring the issue toa public hearing at state level . Councilman Jack Brickell Suggested the city first take public hearing action before reopening the case with the State body. Councilman Ben ago, still hold.
