% a 4 2 ...Nevada County Nugget...May 11, 1966 — NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET WE WILL BACK DON AND LOU Two seats on the county board of supervisors will be up for election in the June 7 pri mary and we like the men now sitting in thém. Don Blake has two men running against him for the seat in the Fourth Supervisorial District. While we have not always agreed with Blake's opinions and his stands on certain issues, he pulls no punches and works hard to represent the interests of his district and of all the people of the county. We think he should be returned to office. Lou Hartman is the freshman member of the board and is running unopposed. He, during the time he has been on the board filling out an unexpired term, has also indicated.an interest in and a concern for the people of the Third District as well as for the entire county. ‘We think he deserves to be re-elected to a full term. A GOOD MAN FOR THE JOB ~ Ed Fellersen is running for re-election to the position of County Superintendent of Schools. As usual, he is running unopposed. There are probably only three reasons why a candidate for public office runs without opposition-he can't be beaten, no one wants the job or he is doing the kind of job that the people feel is adequate. tla The first.two reasons do not apply to the’ incumbent, but the last one does. He has a big job in the county and it is becoming increasingly more complex. He always seems to have the answers or is willing to say he does not know, but knows how to find the answer, This is the type of man we should have overseeing the educational system in the county. We think he deserves a solid vote of confidence. KOHLER IS DOING A GOOD JOB Ted Kohler is running unopposed for the combined post of county clerk-recorder. _ The combined job was thrust.on him when the supervisors created the new post of controller and former county clerk John T. Trauner took over that job. : There was some doubt in some quarters at that time about just how well the combined post of clerk-recorder would work out under Kohler. There should no longer be any doubt for he has taken on both jobs and done them well. We think the voters should support Kohler with a vote of confidence in June. North San Juan Opera House LETTER TO THE EDITOR To The Editof: I'm sure you may be interested to learn -that I won honorable mention in the recent statewide contest “for newspaper verse for the Al Schuster award. —It-was for my poem “The Brighter Side" published in Bob Paine's “Fools Gold" about May of last year when he was writing about Lola Montez. As a somewhat novice poet, I was very happy to come in so close to the prizewinning experts and grateful to your paper and Bob for printing my submission. My thoughts of moving to my plot of God's beautiful earth in Penn Valley Downs with my wife and eight children, have been changed a bit--at least for a while, Last week I was elected City Clerk of Belmont, soI know this may mean some delay, and perhaps a long one, I wonder if the county has considered a weed abatement district? Realizing that the weeds may be both an eye sore and a fire hazard to the nice neighbors I met in the area, I would be happy to pay a bit more on my tax bill each year to have them disced before summer. Gratefully, Jim McLaughlin Belmont, Calif, IN THE FOOTHILLS VEIN HARRY FINALLY MAKES HIS. BID When the date for filing candidacy papers for county offices closed recently a lot of people in this area wondered what happened to Harry Wolters. This week we found out. Many peopie believed that this was going to be the year that Wolters would make his bid for the office of district attomey. He had done everything right leading up to that move except the final act. He had built a good practice in the Twin Cities area, he had
worked as assistant district attorney and then resigned to confront the incumbent, Harold Berliner in-the court on every possible occasion. He was elected to the Sierra College board of trustees and then made chairman. Then he took on the job of public defender, Everything seemed tight for Wolters to run--everything except the fact that he did not run. : Suddenly last week an organization Sprang from nowhere to support a write-in campaign for Wolters. Monday telephones began ringing all over the area in a concerted and well organized writein campaign, ° Wolters is still not running. Supporters say he will not campaign, but if he does get on the ballot through the write-in effort, he will run and he will campaign. A third man in the race will almost surely precipitate a run-off election, but at this point it is any race, body's guess who will be in that -++Don Hoagland NUGGET PARAGRAPHS FROM THE PAST Office of Builders and Consumers Lumber company, Glenbrook, wasnamedas the polling place for election Friday, Feb, 17 of directors and assessor for proposed Alta -Glen Ridge sanitary district. ...Jan. 27, 1950 eee2e¢s NQTHSANJUAN--Mr, A. Hays, driver of the Marysville stage between here and Dobbins hada thrilling experience Saturday morming while going toa trap he had set in one of the ravines between here and the river. As he approached, he noticed an animal in the trap and having forgotten his gun and having nothing else with which to kill it, he returned to the car and took the hammer from underneath the front seat, and returned to the trap. Instead of holding a small fox or city cat, there in the jaws of the small steel trap was a huge coyote wolf, enraged with anger. The ferocious animal was caught only by the paw of one foot, and as Hayes approached, it sprang forhim, grabbing his heavy coat in its mouth and ripping the front of his shirt open with its claws. Hays struck the animala deadning blow in the forehead with the hammer, felling it to the ground. -.-Dec. 27, 1926
