for coming to the base and regretted that he couldn't personally conduct the tour, The base
was being inspected by the inspector general in the annual
readiness inspection, Colonel
Rood was -the tour guide accompanied by two members of
the public information office.
First on the agenda was a
tour of the maintainance hangar
where the F-111 is being modified, There were about 15 planes
getting wing modifications and
other changes, It was explained
that the plane originally was to
cost .about $15 million but be-.
cause of structural problems
and modifications necessary
they now cost about $30 million
each, The colonel explained how
the wings work and the various
combat capabilities the plane
has,
On the other side of the hangar
modifications were being completed on several F-106s, These
‘planes are among the fastest
. fighters in the world and carry
an enormous pay load,
From the hangars the group
went to the cold test facility.
This is one of only two facilities of its type in the country.
It was built te test the wings of
the F-111 under extremely cold
conditions and high stress situations, The room is cooled to
about 65 degrees below zero and
special clamps are attached to
the wings, These clamps are
connected to motors that bend the
wings to high stress tolerances,
