; to: ite . in the hearts of all mankind, ‘ Ba { I tried to assure one of my readers (and the Lint Balers 6) that since I write a Rough and Ready column peace symbols are not in my sphere of subjects, She pointed out that Rough and Ready almost constantly needs more peace, which is cerand that maybe that would make it a proper thing about, Symbols seem completely unnecessary to me, Either it’s in your heart or it isn’t, A wedding band doesn't make a marriage, only a wedding. Waving the flag won't make a appreciate what he has here nor what he could lose, It's kind of embarrassing to me when I catch myself looking favor upon some innate thing as a bolster to my own convictions, No you didn’t uncover my hidden past, In spite of wearing a wedding band to prove it my marriage has been a marriage for 44 years now, It seems symbols are truly important some people, If this is true and a peace symbol's meaning is questionable maybe it would be better to find an unquestionable one than to inadyertently lead some poor weak soul into the wrong camp because of his weakness, After all the Cross in its upright position is a tried and true way to work for Peace * Rough and Ready's new post office went into operation last Thursday, I left some mail at the temporary one in the morning and picked up my mail at the new one in the afternoon, I'm afraid I am not going to like the key bit, I can't keep track of car keys let alone keys for a mail box, Must concede it really opened easily tho'. For goodness sakes don't lose your key. They only reorder every six months, Maybe it's a good thing there is a beautiful big new counter that can be used for delivering mail, You can scratch that dedication we have been writing about, It seems the new postal service doesn't dedicate post offices, $231.00 per month in place of the previous $80.00 and we can't even have a dedication, We won't be wrecking our tires on that wretched gravel anymore though, the new paving is grand, , * * * . The shopping center has lovely new paving too, Besides easier walking for the Mobile Homes Park. renters just think of the lack of dust, I wonder where the winter rain is going to go but somewhere certainly. The planters at the front of the post office remove that drab 'sea of asphalt’ look and there is talk that Mr. Gage might be influenced to put a couple of trees in front of the shopping center. * ok * The William Baumgarts (Bill and Ruby) new owners of the Rough and Ready Market will have a lot fewer problems than did the Collettes, The Baumgarts own another market in Grass Valley and so will be able to provide fresh meat for their Rough and Ready customers, A much needed innovation, We will still miss the Italian Sausage Sam Collette used to grind regularly and lace with his own inimitable spices, We will just have to settle for that delicious smoked hickory flavor the Ebys serve at the cafe, The Ebys have agreed to cook a big smoked hickory roast of beef for the Blacksmith Shop Restoration Committee to serve at the Antique Show at the Armory on Sunday, May 23, We sure need help for that day, Please call 273-2934 if. you would like to serve for a few hours, ‘They have assured us that we can make a nice piece of change to help pay for the front of the old shop in time for the Secession Days Celebration and for the summer tourists to ‘take pictures, * * * Accidents were with us again last week, Nothing as spectacular as Linda Burkhards flying car but these also did plenty of damage, On Friday at Brownie’s Service an old gentleman, BUSINESS . BILLBOARD Sit) back and let clas-. sified ads do the selling, renting or buying . for you. Len Gilbert HEFFREN INSURANCE AGENCY 111 W. Main’ P.O. Box 1034 Grass Valley, Ca. Ph. 265-6166 tert ~ tourist from Arizona, got his camper’ turned ‘into ‘an atcordian by a big truck that didn't stop in time, No one-was really physically hurt which was a miracle, Another miracle happened Thursday night, Young Mike Siegfried got a vesy black eye, but could just as easily have been killed, He ran off the ro and turned over several times on his motor bike to avoid a frontal attack with the Don Litchfield’s Jeep: Lovely thick bushes and trees and narrow curving roads are beautiful but they rule out the possibility of any speed. You just can’t see around or through in pated to stop quickly enough, % * , The Chamber of Commerce has had a marvelous answer from the highway department on Rough and Ready off ramps for the new route planned for Hwy. 20, Besides (I assume) both ends of the new freeway there are to be three Rough and Ready intersections, One will be Spenceville Road, one Rex Reservoir Road, and one Ponderosa Way. No time schedule for completion was given but it looks as we will still be on the map. Ponderosa Way and Rex Reservoir Road will open up 2 lot of back country if and when they are completed, Soon our: hills will be dotted with houses instead of beautiful Pines if we don't watch out. . oR * * The naming of our Rough and Ready Roads (streets) failed to make the projected May 3 hearing, but a definite date has been set for Monday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m, before the planning commission, Mr, Stan Mansfield, director, says he will publish the details at our post office and fire house in plenty of time for you to make plans to be there, We only have one possibility of a name that doesn't fit into the three categories outlined by the committee, These were, in case it has been so long you have forgotten them, mining names like Prospector Road, historically significant names like Secession Way, and names indicative of the terrain or use of the area such.as Rocky Hill Road or Garden Lane, The chamber meets at the hall on May 13, Roads will be reported on and discussed together with the principle orders of business Secession Day and the County Fair. Mr. Malcolm Hammill will be the special guest and everyone is welcome, The meeting starts at 8 p,m. at the Grange Hall, * * Four ladies Mmes, Constance Baer, Fay Dunbar, Thelma Potter, and Lisetta Scheave attended the Nevada County Historical Society's Citizen of the Year Dinner last Saturday at the armory. The only other Rough and Ready residents present were the William Thomas', Joyce was there representing the merchants committee of the Grass Valley Chamber, It was a splendid evening for Arletta Douglas who for 38 years has been a successful business woman of the area, Lisetta Scheave was the only one in our group that could offer her any competition, The Harold Scheaves had their first business here in 1946, when Mr, Scheave bought an assay office in Nevada City. Mrs, Potter has an antique shop in our community but she is relatively new to the are, Her love is antique glass and china, Mrs, Baer and I just concentrate on our families, Connie
has three lovely children still at home. * * On her trip up North last week Mrs, Scheave attended a class reunion in’ Portland (not Seattle as I told you last week) Oregon, Lisetta has had two careers, Before she married Mr. Scheave she was Nurse 'Cinsky' to all her friends, She graduated in 1918 from nurses training at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland, Seven of her former classmates were present at the reunion dinner and Lisetta’s daughter Jacqueline, who attended the party with her said it was like looking back into her mother's youth, * * * Everytime I remember to remind you of Cookie Pack Day they change the date, My friend Mary Moneta who just lives *Cookies for our Boys’ tells me it doesn't really matter, They freeze them, For sure Tuesday May 18 will be Cookie Day. Wednesday, May 19 is Bookmobile Day at the Cafe porch at 2:30-3:30 p.m. * * * The Grange afternoon public party usually the second Sunday of the month was postponed due to Mother's Day to Sunday, May 16 at 1:30 p,m, The Saturday party will be May 22 at 8 p.m, There are five Saturdays in May‘don't get confused, The Grange ladies will meet Tuesday, May 18 at 12 noon for ‘a dessert luncheon before the brief. business session, Bazaar chairman Margaret Brown asks that you bring your completed . tea towels, Get Started Early School to hear PAINTING .
