TOWN TALK (Continued from Page 13) Grace Skaar, famous for her highpriced and stylish Christmas card designs and for her children’s books, says someturtles have been found to be carriers of an unusual . bug that gives people symptoms similar to food poisoning. Now the question is, where do you have a turtle checked out? Dr. George Knox of the Grass Valley Veterinary Hospital says he doesn't know --but admits to not being a turtle expert. And Hal Cox's county health office hasn't heard of turtle ptomaine either, But Grace is sticking to her guns. She says she heard the report about what everyone had regarded as man's cheapest, quietest, and least objectionable pet on the CBS Mike Wallace morning news a few days ago. ® 8 8 @ @. + Turtle Ptomaine...S And P Of SPD..Covey...18 Kt Mistake Messrs. S and P of the SPD shopping center have bought the Gold Nugget bar and restaurant down in the Glenbrook area. eee 8 8 Earl Covey, president of the Grass Valley chamber, chairman of one of the general plan subcommittees, pusher for the Grass Valley freeway, and--among other things--organizer of the popular new organization called Sonsin Retirement, isn't exactly retiring, it seems. There's gold in them thar hills: Stanley Halls and Downey Clinch are wandering around these days with 18-carat gold plated buttocks. Ignored the wet-refurbishing sign on the chairs in the richly re-decorated National Hotel Victorian Dining Room. Left them with a gilty feeling. Lillian’ Molt WILDFLOWER. OF THE WEEK Pacific Star Flower, Trientalis latifolia, Primrose Family Taking advantage of the pale sunshine filtering through the branching canopy of evergreen trees in our forests, the thin leaves of the Star Flower spread horizontally, close to the sun flecked ground, From five to nine of these lanceolate leaves form a whorl of green atopa slender, erect stem four to nine inches tall, Poised above these on threadlike stems are dainty white to pale pink blossoms like seven pointed stars, usually only one blooming on a plant at one time and rarely more than three may be found. Usually shade loving plants are apt to be neglected by butterflies and bees so these plants offer a process of selfpollination, The closing of the petals brings any pollen that may be clinging to the anthers at the time into close contact with the stigma, thus causing — pollination, Locally, avery common sight in our woods, these make their first appearance in May and may be found on into late July. The public is invited to attend this event sponsored by the Mother Vistas Of Wildflowers And Superb Scenery All The Way (Continued from Page 13) none of this seems out of place asa military garrison was part of the scene in mission days, We were fortunate in making our visit when the wildflowers were atthe height of their bloom, Lupines were most in evidence, vast expanses of them, with smaller fields of owl's clover, wild violets and a variety of small yellow or cream-colored daisies, We traveled by a rugged backcountry road from Greenfield, but it is possible to reach the mission by paved road if you approach via U, S. 101 and King City, From there the route zigzags westward through the Santa Lucia Mountains to the coast highway just south of Big Sur, with pavement part way and well-graded gravel from the summit down to the beach. The scenery was superb, green fields with vistas of wildflowers, oaks just coming into leaf, and everywhere a feeling of peace and serenity, Eden might have looked like this at the dawn of creation.
