At Home In Another Country
‘ dor, for several months.
(EDITOR'S NOTE--Steve Ayala,
a former resident of Nevada
County, has been serving with
the Peace Corps in Quito, EcuaHe
recently returned from a monthlong vacation throughout S outh
America. In this report to the
Nugget, he comments on his new
assignment in Quito.)
Since my return from the grand
tour, the job has changed for me
here in Quito. A regular representative has arrived to take over
the business of local development
projects; I left him with a small
mountain of notes and information piled rather high on his
lap--and full assurance that the
project was entirely HIS,

until the end of July I'll be
teaching in the school of the Quito
Mental Hospital--a place said by
many to need help in the worst

teaching biology full time in a
UNESCO project which joins
forces w.th Central University,
Catholic University, Polytechnic
Institute and Alliance for Progress.
It is an accelerated school for
tural normal school teachers;
these teachers in turn during the
year will teach rural elementary

program for these classes is occupying all my time right now.
All that has to be done before
putting in my orders for materials
or equipment I might need from
A. I. D. I've got the uneasy
feeling that the intervening time
is going to FLY.
You ask what and how the news
sources are down here. There are
many, and as you can well imagine, during the recent weeks
there has been a sharp increase
of all sorts of opinion -forming
news. The major Ecuadorian
papers run the US written side of
the story, a side which seems
amazingly neutral as newspaper
wtiting goes, The Voice of
America does a similar type of
reporting, except that the racist
elements are referredtoas “they”
in spirit, while the civil liberty
groups have come to be almost
