However, the two systems are employing entirely different advancement methods in younger grades, with Nevada City using the common first, second, third grade method and Grass Valley innovating non-graded classes in which students advance as they master a level without regard to formal grades. Last year, when testing showed 61 per cent of its second graders did not advance a_full grade in reading, Grass Valley was using the non graded system for the first time.
