WHAT MADE THE U.S. GREAT The year 1968 was christened by many an observer and commentator the Year of the Upset, and correctly so. To be sure, there were nonupset, events in 1968 steady U. S. progress in space research and -exploration..monster New York City and State budgets cooked up by Mayor John V. Lindsay and Gov. Nelson A, Rockefeller respectively..ever bigger spending programs submitted to Congress by President Lyndon B. Johnson..attempts by that same President to "build bridges" of understanding to the Red nations, on advice of bemused aides that the Kremlin was "mellowing"...fast growth of the national debt. But the upsets far outnumbered the no-suprise items. Early in 1968 on Jan. 23the USS Pueblo, an intelligence or spy ship, was grabbed by North Korean patrol boats on a charge of intruding in Red North Korea's territorial waters, along with its: 83-man crewone of whom was fatally wounded during the capture. Washington, fearing _ to heighten U. S. difficulties in the Vietnam war, made slow-motion seemingly halfhearted efforts to get crew and ship back, The crew was released Dec, 22, 1968, after a U.S, “apology” which Maj. Gen. : Gilbert H. Woodward repudiated before signing it. The Viet war floundered on. The Red North Vietnamese were badly beaten in their Tet (lunar pd year) offensive early in Doves; Hawks; Civil Rights But the fact of victory was obscured in the U.S.A. by de-. featist or downright Communist bellowings of antiwar "doves." Among dove leaders were Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), brother of the assassinated President John F, Kennedy, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., prominent Negro civil rights leader. Kennedy continually downgraded President Johnson in an obvious drive to cut him out of nomination for reelection. Dr. King's agitations for civil rights moved other and more impulsive Negro leaders to urge violent uprisings. ~ Seeing the nation becoming more and more divided on these and other questions, President Johnson on March 31, 1968, scored a major upset when he announced via nationwide television that he would not run for reelection. This abdication tossed the political fat into the fire. Sen, Eugene J. McCarthy (DMinn.) had scored heavily in the first of the year's presidential Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, and the — triggered widespread te tae 6, 1968, in Los Angeles, an assassin gunned down Bobby Kennedy. This tragedy aroused freeworld wide grief. Three-Ply Race Won by Nixon At their August convention in ‘Chicago (punctuated with wild. Communists), the Democrats nominated Vice President Hubert H, Humphrey for President and Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine for vice president. The Republicans, at their August convention in Miami Beach, put up former Vice President Richard Milhous Nixon for Chief Executive, with Gov. Spiro T. Agnew of Maryland as Mr. Nixon's running mate, Ex-Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama named himself for President and Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, retired, for vice president on the conservative American Independent ticket. -In the campaign, Mr. Humphrey came from a weak start to a strong finish at the Nov. 5 election, but not quite strong enough to win. Ballot score was: Nixon, 31,770,237 . . . . Humphrey, 31.270,533 . . . . Wallace, 9,906,141 ..... others, 239,908, Electoral college votes : Nixon, 301, (from 32 states) . . » Humphrey, 191 (from 13 states) . . . Wallace, 46 (five states plus one vote from North Carolina), The heavy vote for Wallace, plus Nixon's victory, appeared to indicate a rather strong nationwide trend toward conservatism, after long periods of F, D. Roosevelt—J. F. Kennedy— L. B, Johnson liberalism. Spring A Luncheon Spring heralds that famous American pastime — not golfing, not playing with suburban lawns —but dieting! Gone are the days when a pretty girl had to wrinkle up like a 6 prune in the glare of summer sun—with lasting effects sure to show up later in tiny lines around her eyes. Now, sunglasses are with it —they have become one of the most important fashion accessories in many eye-popping styles. Round-eyed goggles squared-off specs, wrap-around and oval fashions ‘are all in favor and the fashionable sunworshipper has a wardrobe of several pairs.
To be truly in style, however, sunglasses must offer prover protection. When you’re buying a new pair, keep in mind these tips from the experts at Bausch & Lomb: Don’t buy fancy colored lenses, except for out-ofabst. 5 you might be struck by the dazzling effect of pink glasses, "tae eyes may suffer. Also, oddly-colored lenses distort the natural colors of objects and most often don’t provide adequate glare protecAs the people from “Hair” — that great tribal-rock musical sing — now’s the time to let the “sun shine in.” Not only has spring sprung — and you’ve lost that up-tight winter feeling—but you feel as if you want to celebrate something. And why not? Spring is the time for re-celebrating the things you’ve done without all winter: the first ice cream cone of the season you can eat without feeling cold inside and out, the first dip of a foot into the lake to test the water’s temperature, the first walk in the park to see how the flowers are doing (while you’re really watching HIM). course, another way you celebrate is by sheddi those heavy, dark winter clothes and putting on light cottons, knits and linens. Your body is free to move — in swimming, dancing or just running and jumping. And while you’re at it, why not let your face celebrate the first robin’s chirp, too. Liberate your face of winter make-up and plump for skin-skimming spring cosmetics—light and bright like the first sun rays. Let it all shine out with lipsticks like Tussy’s Realgirl Gold Ore or Silver Mine Tintype Transparent Lip Coverings. More or less a lipstick (more shine than a regular lipstick, but less density—so the real you shines through), these little sticks turn on the glow. You can celebrate the first day above 70° or the silvery sliver of the moon on romantic evenings with them —or even more patriotically, our trips to the moon. Now’s the time to put your money where your mouth is. Invest in new.out-shine-’em-all lipsticks — and put a smile and a shine on your face. tion. The only safe hues which don’t effect color perception are sage green and dark gray. prepared to spend a little more to protect your eyes: A great deal of time and effort are involved in the manufacture of quality sunglasses. Ray-Ban sunglasses, for instance, are made of ground, polished optical glass and checked to make sure they are free of distortions that would be distressing to your eyes. Lastly, always use care in selecting a proper frame. The frame should fit so well that you hardly know you’re wearing glasses. And a quality frame will withstand the normal rough treatment that sunglasses get. ; Follow these rules for choosing sunglasses and you'll not only be in fashion — your eyes will be right for summer and all year ’round. Underwater Research Journey To Hitch-Hike On Gulf Stream _Six men and a unique submarine named “Ben Franklin,” will explore one of the earth’s last frontiers in June in a fourweek underwater journey from Florida to Massachusetts. Led by Swiss ocean engineer, Dr. Jacques Piccard who designed and supervised construction of the 50-foot submarine in Switzerland, the scientists will drift in the north bound currents of the Gulf Stream at depths from 300 to 2,000 feet. e Ben Franklin, built and operated by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, will enable the six crewman to make continuous measurements and conduct long-term experiments in the same volume of water as the boat glides silently along the Atlantic coast. The crew, in addition to Dr. Piccard, consists of Donald J. Kazimir, Grumman captain of the Ben Franklin; Erwin Aebersold, of Lausanne, Switzerland, a member of Piccard’s staff and chief pilot; Roswell F. Busby, civilian scientist with the U.S, Naval Oceanographic Office; Chester B. May, of . th National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Kenneth Haigh, British Navy researcher, an exchange scientist. with the Naval Oceanographic Office. In addition to experiments in acoustics, marine biology, bottom topography and other marine phenomena conducted by Busby and Haigh, the mission will afford NASA scientist May the opportunity to better define the analog or similarities between long-term underwater isolation and future space flights, by Observing psychological and physiological effects on the crew, and maintainability of equipment aboard. The Gulf Stream Drift Mission will begin on June 2, when the white steel superStructure of the Ben Franklin slips beneath the waves off the coast of Palm Beach, only to reappear some four weeks . later, east of Cape Cod. ‘= i ; tp ; oe
