Petroglyphs found in
Tahoe National Forest
What have we found in your
Forest? Petroglyphs.
Indian writings covering two
acres and possibly more have
been found in the Tahoe
National Forest.
Last fall a road designer,
Lee Jordan, was surveying. a
possible quarry .site for a
timber sale in the Downieville
Ranger District when he
discovered the rocks had
definite picture patterns
chipped in them.
Forest Archeological
Coordinator Susan Lindstrom,
looked at them before the
snows fell and confirmed
Jordan’s findings. She said
plans are currently underway
for an archeological reconnaissance or survey of the
surrounding area for more
writings as soon as the snow
melts.
Petroglyphs were made by
early native Americans, theoldest of which probably date
back in this area a few
thousand years. Many varied
theories have resulted from
attempts to find the meaning
of these picture writings.
