Above the canon's roar a couple of Sundays ago when
the plaque on the National was being dedicated perhaps
you didn ‘t hearthe programmed remarks of Walt Skinner
chief of the Drum Division of Pacific Gas & Electric Co,
So for the benefit of history buffs they are here repeated
quote"It isindeed a pleasure for me to represent the Pacific
Gas and Electric Company in the dedication of this
historic edifice, the National Hotel, for it is here in
Nevada County and Nevada City. that the first of the
many corporationsthat go to form P.G.&E. was established, the Cayote and Deer Creek Water Company,
back in 1850, This was the first company to be incorporated in the United States for the purpose of supplying
water for mining operations. It might also be said that
the Company's first general office was located in Nevada
City, the office of the Cayote and Deer Creek Water
Company, and it was here in the ornate National Hotel
against whose bar once leaned founders of Pacific Gas
and Electric Company, Eugene De Sabla, John Martin
andothers, who undoubtedly transacted considerable
business which played an important. part in the formation of the P,G, &E,
It was in Nevada County that Eugene J. De Sabla, Jr.,
together with a Cornish miner, Alfonso Tregidgo, incorporated the Nevada Connty Electric Power Company on
September 22, 1892. In 1895 Eugene De Sabla was
joined by John Martin who contracted for the installation of the electrical equipment. At that time Mr. Martin was representing the Stanley Electric Manufacturing
Company, which was later merged into the General
Electric Company, That contract was the instrument
which brought De Sabla and Martin together into a re~
markable team, the two men responsible, more than
any others, for the creation of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Each has been called the father of the
P.G.&E, system. In little more than 10 hectic years they
built hydro electric plants, organized one corporation
after another, consolidated gas and electric systems,
snow -balled their small begifinings into the extensive
foundation upon whichthe P,G.&E, structure was raised.
It is doubtful that either could have realized fully during
those years exactly where they were heading, for from
thathumble beginning merged the largest gas and electric utility company in the world today.
This hotel is one of the few remaining reminders in
this area that marks the beginning of the Pacific Gas and
Electric Company and we think it is extremely appropriate that the Wm. Bull Meek and Wm. Morris Stewart Chapter of E Clampus Vitus recognized its historic
importance with the dedication of this plaque.
In the good old summertime---the place, Shebley’s Pond
near Chicago Park, transportation to the picnic by open
Nevada County Narrow Gauge RR cars; the year, 1912,
the whole world was at peace, it was straw hats and high
button shoes. L-RJosehine Colvin (Chegwidden), Helene
