Chester said the contest is opentoany young lady with talent and beauty, between the age of 16 and 26 on Aug. 26, 1962, and who has been a California resident since Aug. 26, 1961, The Maid must also reside in Nevada County andnever have been married. The sponsoring organization, the Grass Valley Jaycees, will announce the location of the contest at a later date. Linda McCombs won the honor last year from.an entry list of 24. Applications are available by mail from Chester, P.O, Box 1444, Grass Valley. The county winner competes in the statewide contest to pick the Maid of California at the California State Fair. Nevada City, is one of 80 superior teachers of high school French who will live and study at a French Institute in Besangon, France, June 20 through Aug. 21. The Institute is directed by Emory University of Atlanta, Supported by a grant of $134,500 from the U.S. Office of Education, the group of teachers selected from all over the country willreceive special instruction in French language and culture. The participants, all of whom have attended previous institutes in this country, were chosen from 450 who applied by the Institute Faculty Committee at Emory. The Emory Institute is one to two in France to be supported bytheU.S. Office of Education this summer. Faculty members will include persons drawn from Emory, the University of Besancon, Pennsylvania State, Michigan State and Ripon College, Dr, Oscar Haec of Emory will bethe director. Members of the Institute will spend seven weeks at Besancon, one week inParis . and one week traveling in Britanny and the Loire valley. They will also spend four days attending the Avignon . City Manager Suggests Animal Shelter Contract NEVADA CIT Y--City Manager Charles Smith sug— gested to Nevada City Councilmen Monday nightthat the city proceed with the negotiation of a new contract on operation of the animal shelter.
