WHAT DOES $190 MILLION feel like? State
Treasurer BertA. Betts (above right) knows
as he accepts check for the largest single
sale of State bonds in California's history
from Earl Lee Kelly, representative of Bank
of America, which headed the syndicate
buying the bonds along with Bankers Trust
Company, New York. Kelly handed Betts
the check inside the giant vault at the
State Capitol inSacramento before Bank of

THE CALL DIRECTOR, one of the most recent ' tdephone systems developed for the business customer, has
just been installed in the Grass Valley business office.
Pictured above is Deanna Hoffman, business office representative andBill Bishop, PBX installer. Bill is making
the final test on the Call Director installed on Deanna's
desk. The new set, which is a combined unit, includes
the dial and 18 buttons. This easily serves the 6 lines
and 9 telephones in the business office, and gives plenty
of room for future growth. It also includes the hold
feature, the intercom line, and dial selective signalling.
This enables the answering party tohold an incoming call
onthe line. She can then call outside for additional information for a customer. By using the intercom line
she can also dial the extension number of any other telephone in the office and talk to the other employee or
transfer the call to the other party. For further information on this new telephone equipment, call or come
into the local business office at 149 S. Auburn Street ,
Grass Valley.

A “rock factory” in which
man, not Mother Nature runs things, has
recently gone into operation. It belongs to
Western Electric, the
manufacturing branch
of the Bell System, and
the rocks produced are
quartz crystals.
Thin slices of quartz
crystal are used in several types of telephone
equipment. While
there’s lots of natural
quartz in the world, big
crystals that can be
sliced’ are scarce and
expensive. :
«To get around this,
Western Electric is
w” large crystals from
inexpensive pieces of quartz. The man-made
crystals (above) cost a lot less than large, natural ones.
And because they are more evenly shaped, twice as many
usable slices can be cut from them.
