of the County Supervisors, i ail cea were sure it body, there would be very “If all printers were determined not to print any thing till they ould offend no Benjamin Franklin A regular biweekly feature column in this paper is “Supervisor's Corner", written by William "Bill" Thomas, the 4th District Supervisor, The column that appeared in this paper on May 3rd . under this heading was criticized in the May 8th Board Meeting Four supervisors were under the impression that the title of the column intimated that the column reflected the views of all the members of the board which. is not the case. The column carries a by~line atthe top: ‘by W. E,. “Bill Thomas, Sup. Dist, 4, Nev, Co, ', but to make it even more explicit, we-will add a line stating that the column expfesses the-views of Mr,Thomas alone, One other objection made by the supervisors was that one paragraph “inferred that the Board had made deals because of presf sure.. . the integrity of the Board has been impugned", as Mr, Bennallack put it, We deny that the column did any. such thing, If it were so, wé would have libeled the Board and would print an apol anda retraction. We have no reason to questign the integrity of the Board. Mr, Thomas was speaking rhetorically and philosophically throughout his article. We earnestly hope that this matter is now over and can be forgotten. The supervisors have important work to do and ittakes all five members, functioning as a team, if that work is to be done efficiently. The result of all the publicity (articles appeared in the Sacra_ mento Bee and in alocal daily publication) is to call attention to Mr, Thomas’ column, The Nugget will continue to allow its columnists and correspondents to voice their individual opinions as long as they are earnest and in good taste, Some of our columnists disagree with us, which is only proper. Your right to know depends in part on our printing all current opinions of the community, not only those opinions that appear to be safe and popular, $223,00 For Roads More than 26 miles on three state highways in the mountain Nevada County Rainfall Gauge Nevada City Max, Min, Rainfall May 10 68 39 .81 11 53 31 12 55 32 Bre! 13 62 32 14 71 37 15 75 41 16 80 44 Rainfall to date: 67, 36 Rainfall last year: 40, 94 Grass Valley Max, Min. Peg 020 BODKIN Letters To ‘The Editor ; Dear Editor: The Board of Supervisors, by a four to one vote, would like to suggest to you, that your Column headed “Supervisors Corner” and written by Supervisor William E. Thomas, be changed toa more appropriate heading, which will more clearly indicate to allreaders, that this column contains the views of Mr, William E, Thomas only, and ihn no way represents the feeling of the Board, 3 This letter comes to you in the form_of a suggestion only, and in no way is the Board trying to dictate how to run . your newspaper, Sincerely, Theo, A. Kohler,. Jr. Co, Clerk & Ex-Officio Clerk Board of Supervisors County of Nevada Dear Editor: « Your articles concerning th Hippies were very beautiful, It is the first unbiased rep ort we have ever read, A truly amazing phenomenon is the hypocrisy shown by the city of San Franciscoin regard to some members of the Human Race, People actually go to church on Sunday and yet hate some men because they are black, and others because they dress and act differently,
The people who truly try to help each other and practice selflessness are the ones closest to God, Those who accept each human being as being a manifestation of God .are the priests and lovers of this world. We must love and love all and give and give all and not ask for anything in return, The Hippies are blessed people and-so are you, the people who accept them, Béckie Hazlewood Katie Yanow Becky Kettenhofen Marlowe Frantz Students from John Woolman From the Macer County line to a point 4-1/2 miles south, and half a mile in the vicinity of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks in Truckee, a total distance of five miles. L THOUGHT SHE'D DIE. Q SUPERVISORS CORNER These are the views of W.E,'BILL’ THOMAS SUP. DIST.-4, NEV. CO. THE RIGHT TO KNOW!! i Every citizen has a right to know how the administration of hisgovernment is carried out, It has been declared that one of the greatest dangers to our way of life is the suppression of thoughts and ideas critical of those who are in control, Possibly the greatest contribution a public official can make while in office ‘is to create interest, enthusiasm and support for good government through an enlightened electorate. The May 3rd edition of this column has become somewhat controversial. My colleagues on the Board of Supervisors showed quite an interest, It was suggested that some clarification is necessary so that no one will mistake the views herein expressed as representing the Board, I agree, and from this point on the caption “These are the views of W. E, “Bill” Thomas" will be included, Now for the business athand ! Have you ever tried to put together a family budget! Most everyone has. And, unless you are the exception, you've had very little success with this sort of organized approach to family finances, Either you can’t get along on the little your budget will afford, or-you run into trouble when there. appears an unforeseen demand on the family treasury, Now, complicate this even further by Pop suggesting he may or may not get that bonus and you have a good parallel, on a simp le scale, of “the job of putting together a county budget, The county has in-creased needs for services. There are always those things that come up which were not anticipated. And finally the county, too, doesn't know exactly the level of state financing to cover state imposed programs, And every $6, 000, 00 budgeted from county tax monies has the effect of 1¢ on our tax rate, ee This is my first exposure to this sort of budgetary problem, And, it ain't easy!! There are people and equipment which must be added, And, at the same time, it's almost impossible to cut down on what is currently existing. I am determined at this point to hold the line --How longi can keep this posture is anybody's guess, Whatever happens I want to be able to demonstrate where each dollar goes and why! As an example, let's take the operating budget for Nevada General Hospital, We see a request for approx~ imately $400, 000,00. Ah! This looks like fertile gr ound, This represents 67¢ onthe tax rate--Notso. The $400, 000, 00is totallyfinanced by pay patients, hospital insurance, state medical cover~ age and the like, Meanwhile, back at the drawing board!! If anyone feels they have the answers to the problem of preparing a county budget, pleaseGive me a call at 273-8858, I will be happy to get your ideas, share your concern and hopefully find a solution, Local Girl Honored Patricia Weiss was honored recently when the University of California at Davis notified her that she has been awarded a scholarship which will permit herto continue her study of foreign language.
