Mr. Editor: Sunday morning I went up to look at the old Nevada Theatre. It brings many memories back to me. The times I sneaked in while I was a kid; ‘And@*also the nights that I slep there I was afraid togo home because Iplayed hookey ‘and did not like school and felt like I was in -@box, “I-can see the rambling proch yet that 2 othe rai the whole length of the old show house and the building next door that was torn down. ‘“ T hawe looked at many pictures of the Theatre. They were very nice but let's face it, none of them looked like the original. I still can see the old Theatre in my mind. There is a lot of ' things I can forget but not the old Nevada. I seen a lot of good road shows and ! also . sneaked in when Emma Nevada came back toNevada City. Them are memories I will never forget, ‘They were good days then. Valley News By Jerry Moore = Box 3 Mobilehome Ranch Ph.273-6656 On May 8, the Boys Brigadeplayed a sand-lot baseball game in a cow pasture on the dairy farm owned by Melvin and Bert Brown of Penn Valley. When clouds hid the sun and the baseball was too. difficult to see, the game was converted to softball,, Following the ball game, a short parade drill practice was carried on. Their leader is fully aware of the fact that some of these boys are potential military draftees, and are only three or four years away from service. If properly prepared in discipline, their new exPerience would not be such a shock to their systems when "Uncle Sam” greets them into the army, The new record number of boys in attendance is fourteen, Citizen of the week; Mr. Albert. Sears, who lives on an access road just off Spencerville Road. This gentleman is active ina large degree with youngsters, particularly boys. Al is involved with 4-H Clubs and the Little League program, and found that parents of these amateur and junior athletes were the larger problem, Mr. Sears is also a golfer, * A short time ago, Troop 299 was taken up to Malakoff Diggings State Park. While there, these scouts aided Ranger Eric Leffingwell by planting trees and cleaning around camp sites. On the scoutmaster's agenda for future events is a hot-dog toast and base= ball game with the Boys Brigade, This is scheduled for the summer after schools are adjourned Yor a vacation, Mr. Sears works as a civilian telephone technician at Beale Air Force Base, The Penn Valley area is certainly not without its talk about the controversial people termed “hippies”, particularly the group which is settling near Edwards Crossing, But even though beatniks are non-conformists to the ways of general society, why should we ridicule and look down our noses at then, and stare at them as if they were some kind of caged fréaks in a side: show? There are many people besides beatniks who today are nonconformists to the higher moral laws of God, -I certainly am not condoning the activities and characteristics of the beatniks, such as their abominable philosophy of life, vague methods of subsistence, poor hygiene, free-love practices, and common use of drugs, I detest these things with a passion; The point that I am _ trying to make here is this, God will judge the hippies as He will judge every human being in this world, The Almighty does’ not measure sins with a yardstick or barometer. A real estate broker who tells lies to a prospective buyer about some property in-order « to sell it at the top: markét price, is no less guilty of violating ~ moral laws than a beatnik who ‘takes part in a “love in" party or a hallucinatory “trip" under the influence of the drug LSD. How much better are so-called good solid citizens--church.go= ing, significant in public affairseewho sometimes underpay their © taxes: ate always eager to sue their neighbors or spread malicious. tumors about their co-workers? I claim that these gypsy-like escapists from reality (hippies), even though they may be intelligent, are psychologically miserable and must ‘be desperate for help, as would anyone be who is depressed and confused about his or her purpose in this life. We allneed Divine wisdom from above, And so before we condemn these beatniks mentally, at least, and cast that first stone, let us clean up the filth and wickedness in our own backyards, By the way, I heard that high-heeled sneakers are really "in" this year! A few weeks ago, Mr, John Kari bought a Rambler station wagon for his family, He purchased it from a private party, John said that he was mainly looking for fuel economy in this vehicle, and was disappointed insofar as he was able to get "only" 25 miles per gallon, The Kari family has its home off the Indian Springs Rd. Mr. Zerkel is renting a home for his family of six on Spencer. ville Road just opposite the entrance/exit of Ready Springs School. This soft-spoken and husky father of four is a carpenter, working over at the Bullards Bar dam project. His job is building forms for concrete and other fill materials. Mr. Zerbel said that snow and rain does not cause him to be laid off ftom work, in fact, at quitting time one day this spring, a bulldozerhad to push snow off the road so that employees could return to their homes, Having two girls and two boys(the girls being older), Zerbel said that his chil-’ dren arrived in reverse order of his plans, but I have strong convictions that Mr, and Mrs, Zerbel will keep their sons and daughters anyhow. .ccecce Win Free Prizes Prizes views is his wife, Carol.
